We signed an undrafted free agent punter out of Oklahoma, Tress Way. Perhaps it was only because of his name but he was the best punter in the Sooner's history. Is there any chance he could beat out Podlesh for punter?

Do any of the UDFA's have a chance to stick?

I'm thinking Lonegen the LSU center might have a shot. And Russell the kid from Ga. Southern.

Podlesh rates pretty good in the league. I would guess this kid is nothing more than a camp leg, but anything is possible.

Podlesh was kind of disappointing last year. Maybe. Actually, probably not.

I see where they signed ANOTHER punter from USC, Kyle Negrete. Things that make you go......hmmm?

They also signed a former Iowa kicker who kicked in 1 game, that's right 1 game and hasn't kicked in an organized football game in 3 years since...to a 3 year deal. Raise your hand if you think Robbie Gould is in danger. Anyone? Bueller?

I admit that I am somewhat concerned that it has taken him this long to heal...and he still is not capable of kicking. I just hope he is OK. We would really miss his reliability.

I'd keep Podlesh but competition for him is never a bad thing. I thought he had a poor start to last season but really upped his game after they brought in a few punters for tryouts in week eight-ish, that seemed to give him the kick up the backside he needed and he finished the year off well. Plus he had that hip injury at the start of the year which may have hindered him slightly.

I assure you if they didn't think Gould would be ready by camp, they wouldn't have signed Signor, or at least not just Signor. But hey, at least there is a Hawkeye on the roster now.

That's all I've ever asked of them.

I doubt Podlesh goes anywhere…remember it was DeCamillis is Jacksonville who worked with Podlesh as a rookie and more than likely had a big say in his drafting.

Podlesh had a pretty crappy year ranking 19th in net avg. Since our special teams gave up very few return yards I would have expected him to rank higher. He does put the ball inside the 20 better than almost all other punters but will that be as important to an offensive minded coach?

Yes, field position is going to be extremely important to an offensive minded coach.

With Smith the offense was so inept that field position was critical. With Trestman I don't expect that to be the case.

As an offensive minded coach, you want to make the opponent work as hard as possible to score to match yours, thus field position is extremely important. Net AVG is the most overrated Punter stat. Punting is all about keeping opponents inside the 20.

Agree, although you need a guy who can get you out of your own end zone too. A guy who can pin the opponent inside the 10 from midfield is huge, but a guy who gives the opponent the ball at our 40 when we punt from our own 10 will kill us.
