That's a ridiculous amount of money ($13M) for a LB. The top average salary for a LB (of course, he's now a DE in the 4-3) was DeMarcus Ware at $11.1M.

I hope his contract, along with Rodgers' that will be signed soon, will hamstring the Packers in a couple of years.

I hope so, should make it hard for them to keep homegrown talent. Matthews is overrated anyway, certainly not worth 13 mil a year.

Clay is certainly worth the money, when healthy.

Ware's contract is four years old at this point, and you can bet that if he were Clay Matthews age, coming off of his rookie deal, he would get $13+M

You can't really compare Clay's money to LB money, it would be more appropriate to compare his money to top DE money.

Matthews: "What's a four letter word for 'exceedingly wealthy'...?"

True, it's not like he can actually cover all that well anyway. Laughing

Heck, Jared Allen's probably better in coverage than Matthews. Wink

With Clay Matthews' 5 new years, and $3.73M for '13 folded in, it's about $69.73 million over 6 years.

Harvin's 6-year total: $67 million.

6 for 70 million is very fair in my opinion.

That's not too bad then. But, he's certainly a far safer bet than Harvin was. I haven't heard about Clay having any meltdowns with Ted Thompson. Smile

Whole lot of money to throw down on 2 players. Those guys deserve it though. I'm curious what Rodgers' contract will look like ($20-$25M?).

Might be tough for them to hold onto their home-grown players in the coming years. They've got quite a few starters coming up on a contract year (the guys in bold will be coming off rookie contracts)..

--2014--
Jermichael Finley
Ryan Pickett
BJ Raji
James Jones
Sam Shields
Morgan Burnett
Marshall Newhouse
Evan Dietrich-Smith
Mike Neal
James Starks
CJ Wilson
MD Jennings

--2015--
Jordy Nelson
Randall Cobb
Bryan Bulaga

they're presently hung up over $2 mil per year.

Rodgers has asked for $22 mil, and the Packers have offered $20 mil.

It will kind of be similar to Clay. Rodgers has 2 years about 20 million on his current deal.

If he signs a 5 year 115 million extention (23 per), it would be an effective 7 year 135 million ~>19 million per.

Yep. Nothing wrong with that deal. CMIII is well worth that kind of money.

I'd argue Jordy is probably around the 30th-40th best receiver in the NFL, maybe 50th.

Numerous front office men say there were not surprised to see Eddie Lacy fall to the Packers at the end of the second round. The more NFL teams looked at him, the more faults they saw. Lacy was knocked for poor work habits, lack of speed, durability concerns, a limited body of work and running style.

I laugh when people say the Packers will be so much more balanced now. Yeah, they might run the ball 12 times a game instead of 10...
