Historically most of the NFL teams have run a 4-3 base defense, which gave an advantage to 3-4 teams, who are able to draft undersized tweener ends late in the draft because they didn't have much value to 4-3 teams and likewise with smaller tackles or slower ends to play 5 technique.

This year I counted 15 NFL teams that are running a 3-4 defense. I am guessing this is the largest number of teams to ever adopt the scheme, but if the trend continues and the league gets to point where 18-20 teams are running 3-4, wouldn't the reverse become true? Couldn't strictly 4-3 players become easier to find because 3-4 teams don't value them. Or do you think the league will always find a balance and teams will start to switch back to 4-3?

Also, it seems like more college programs are running 3-4 defenses, making 3-4 ready players more common than before.

Having another tech on the field? Priceless.

All I know is, this D needs to learn to get off the field on 3rd and long. If we can get off the field on 3rd and long, we beat the 49ers in the playoffs...

The pendulum keeps swinging back and forth. Dallas went to a 4-3 just as the Dolphins did last year, Ravens run a bunch of 4-3 with Suggs' hand in the dirt, Buffalo moved away from the 4-3, Oakland got rid of the 4-3 a while ago, New England hasn't officially switched but they have, Philadelphia will be using both 3-4 and 4-3 looks, the Jets seem on the brink of switching, Arizona runs a 5-2...

Another way to look at it, only one team has never run a 3-4 and the team's legacy of middle linebackers happens to be unmatched. (Chicago Bears).

Both defenses have their advantages and because of that and the different athletes required for both they'll likely remain rather balanced barring game altering rule changes.
