Assuming they signed him as Bushrod's replacement at LT... No me gusta.

If he just could become the player everyone expected him to become. Interesting to see what his contract will look like. If it's for vet minimum I really like it! Brown and Smith will no fight for the starting LT spot.

He is just a guy being brought in to compete for a roster spot. I am sure that he will make near league minimum. He has potential...and Brees has a much faster release than Bradford. I am all for this move...because I have ZERO faith that Charles Brown will stay healthy. I honestly don't even trust Brown as a backup.

Low risk-High reward. From what I remember he was a good run blocker but couldn't pass block worth a lick, hell likely take over Striefs "6th OL" role.

Well it's a good thing we're a run-first offense then!

Am I the only one that feels that everything leading up to this point...

The sleepless nights comment from Payton
The visit with Lane Johnson (whom we have no shot at)
The signing of a guy like Smith

To me it all smells like a motivational tatic by Payton to get Brown to turn a corner. I feel Payton knows Brown is his best option at LT and is doing everything he can the light a fire under his butt.

I hope that's the case. I'm not completely sold it is, but I think it's a possibility. There's talks of Johnson going 6th now (Cleveland trades down). We would give up to much to move that high. I'm not sold on any OTs at 15. I say go with Brown and see what happens.

Jason Smith was the #2 overall pick due to his ability to pass protect as well as run block when he had RGIII at QB, a guy who also has a rather quick release and can move around in a pocket. I think he would be a great option at tackle for us with Brees at QB.

So what your saying is that in RG3's freshman year he made this dude a ton of money.

Yeah, but unfortunately things have changed, from what I've read from Rams fans, he almost broke his neck during a game and he hasn't been the same since. He's not being brought in to start at LT, he was brought in for depth and to compete but I'd be shocked if he won the job. He's been miserable in pass protection in the NFL.

Can't really motivate a guy to stay healthy. Unless you're thinking that Brown's injuries have been ones he could've played through.

Maybe not all of them but most of them and that's the sense I get from Payton as well when he talks about the subject.
