Hopefully the Patriots offer Freeney that kind of money.

I just don't want the team to guarantee any money, no matter how small, to any of these aging DE veterans past next season. That would be a dumb move to make, maybe we have learned something from the Ty Warren mistake.

Here's an article about just that very thing. Should alleviate your misgivings.

I agree 100%.

No way in hell would give $6m to either Freeney or Abraham. I'd be comfortable giving either $3m but I wouldn't go above that.

Elway needs to stay firm - 2 years and $6m with the only the first year and it's $3m guaranteed.

IMO even that is too much. 2yrs $5m is more than enough and nothing is guaranteed. If you can show up to camp in good enough shape to make the team we don't need to give you the one of the worlds biggest welfare checks! Ownership should eliminate this garanteed money anyway. Too many players, IMO, let their output go way down because they are getting that last big paycheck if they play or not!

Now that Elvis has left the team, how will his position be filled?

[There are other lower-probability choices like Shaun Phillips (ex-Chargers LB) or signing another OLB.]

My guess is that the odds of signing Shaun Phillips are increasing.

I think Robert Ayers will do fine as the base defense DE but a pass-rushing specialist would help.

With Osi signed and Freeney (and presumably Abraham) wanting too much money, suddenly Phillips is looking more positive from a price/performance perspective. Phillips would be a stop-gap player with only a year or two of playing time left in the tank, but, that would overlap well with a rookie.

In this scenario, the team would draft a new pass-rusher in the late 2nd or 3rd rounds while using the 1st round for BPA.

Possible picks: Jamie Collins , Corey Lemonier, or Brandon Jenkins.

Hopefully Phillips won't play lazy and unmotivated like he did for the Chargers for the past two years. I'm sure being competitive will fire him up.
