More 4-3 but a good depth signing IMO

Like it for depth and maybe future starter down road.

He's only on a 1 year deal so it's definitely not immediate notice like he's going to be cut this season. I could see Shaughnessy doing very well though and supplanting Dockett as a starter and then we cut Dockett at the end of the year and give Shaughnessy a long term deal. I like this pick up a lot actually. Easily better run defender than Dockett. That seems to be a major theme in all these defensive pickups. They all hold up well vs the run.

We now have a great 5 man rotation on the DL with Campbell, Dockett, Williams, Shaughnessy, and Carter. I think that's the most solid part of our D right now.

Filling holes on D during FA, like it. One year deals lots of motivation.

The base deal is $1 million, with the ability to make several hundred thousand more via sacks and playing time.

He had interest elsewhere (including Tennessee and Philly, where he had trips scheduled), for deals longer than a year and for more money. Shaughnessy opted instead to roll the dice on a one-year opportunity to improve his value come 2014.

This is from PFF but if true, that's a great "show-me" deal. He could have had bigger and better deals but opted for a 1 year deal to potentially cash in next off season. That's a big risk but it shows he's ready to give it all he's got. $1 million is dirt cheap.

Shows our hand for draft.

We have filled holes at CB, DE/DT and ILB

Leaves S and OLB for D at draft time.

Those are the only 2 big needs on defense I agree.

Nice depth move. Hopefully he can lose weight and play some LB.

Im expecting huge play from Dockett this season.( it just seems a year he would to me)

But would there be a cap hit if Dockett is traded or released next year?

Darnell is a FA in 2016

Has average base salaries for next few years, over $5 mil, so his cap hit is Kerry Rhodes like.

There will be some dead money if cut after 2013, trying to work it out atm.

9/1/2010: Signed a six-year, $56 million contract. The deal contains $30 million guaranteed, including a $15 million option bonus in the second year. Dockett is eligible for annual $250,000 workout bonuses. Another $500,000 is available in incentives. 2013: $4.45 million, 2014: $5.5 million, 2015: $6.55 million, 2016: Free Agent
