Personally, I think if we can hold onto Reed as our deep threat deterrent, adding a Johnathan Cyprien or Matt Elam to our defense would be tremendous. They'd get to play the same roamer role that Pollard was playing, only they'd play it closer to the level of what Reed was able to do prior to his shoulder/nerve injury than what Pollard provided. And both can tackle well and blitz well off the edge. Obviously by saying "closer" I don't mean they'd be anywhere near Prime Reed, but they're more talented than Pollard and in that capacity could have an outside chance of pulling off an All Pro 2nd team mention as a rookie... at least it wouldn't surprise me for either player if they're afforded the same freedoms that Pollard had. |
What about Shamarko? Are you still high on him? Obviously if we have a shot at Cyprien or Elam somewhere in the 2nd, via trade up or trade down, we should pounce but would you like Shamarko otherwise... as the third option? |
I'm still high on Thomas, but I think he might be overdrafted as opposed to when I thought he was a sleeper/steal in the draft. I was able to reasonably add him in the 5th/6th rounds of my drafts with no raised eyebrows. Looking at his tape, I think he's the 4th best safety in this class. So I could conceive of him going late 2nd/early 3rd... and at that point, I think their would still be better values for us to pursue. But in the 3rd/4th, I'd like his value- for us. He's not the best in deep zone coverage, but plug him in man coverage and he looks very good covering WRs and his instincts attacking the run are really good. So playing a roamer role, I like his fit.
But obviously you'll have to try and protect him from being lined up against big TEs in coverage too often... however with a 40.5" vertical (IIRC) he has some vertical ability to challenge an intermediate pass if a QB underestimates him and what he can bring to the table. _________________
