What I'm confused about is why they're saying it can be used as a vaginal gel?
Wouldn't that mean someone would have to use it beforehand? |

While they think this could be used as an actual cure with like a vaccine at some point, they believe the more likely application at this point would be a tool of prevention. So if Jack and Jill are a couple and one of them had HIV and the other didn't, they could use this jelly and make sure the other one didn't contract the virus, while still allowing them to have children.
This would be particularly helpful in third world countries. Many of these areas view things like condoms as taboo because it interferes with the ability to procreate and many associate it with promiscuity, so having something that can kill HIV without those social barriers could go a long way to higher usage rates.
