This is a “what I am thinking” mock...

Scenario:
~We are awarded a 4th round compensatory pick for Matt Flynn

Released/Not resigned/Retired:
~Greg Jennings
~Cedric Benson
~Jeff Saturday
~Jermichael Finley: My gut tells me he won’t be back next year. Cutting him frees up too much money.
~AJ Hawk: Ditto

Resigned:
~Evan Dietrich Smith

~Sam Shields

~Erik Walden

~Tom Crabtree

Free Agency:
~Steven Jackson RB St. Louis Rams

I just think there is gonna be so much value for Jackson. I am anticipating teams overlooking him for his age. It reminds me of the Patriots trading for Corey Dillon in 2004. He’s a talented RB stuck on a bad team, and he would do wonders for our team. He would force teams to respect the run and not sit in two deep Safety shell. Plus we know TT has tried to trade for Jackson on several previous occasions. Now that he’s a FA, I’m thinking TT might make a play.

I think he will be cheap, and I think he may be the missing piece.

~Chris Canty DL New York Giants

I think there is a very reasonable chance that TT signs both of these guys. TT had interest in Canty in 2008 and apparently still does. Adds some depth to our DL.

The Draft:
With the 26th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
Tyler Eifert TE Notre Dame
6’6” 251 lbs. 4.70/40

The more I think about it, the more I think Eifert will be the pick. I honestly do not know how the Packers can not address TE early in the drarft. Realistically, if we want to move on from Finley, we are probably going to need to take either Eifert or Ertz.

Of the two, Eifert is probably the better fit. He is passionate about football and is known for his work ethic off the football field. He was used by Notre Dame much like we use Finley. Spread him out wide and use him like a big WR. Should be a good fit.

With the 58th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
Quinton Patton WR Louisiana Tech
6’0” 202 lbs. 4.58/40

Of all the prospects out there, I am most sure Quinton Patton will be a Packer. I really think he is a rare talent stashed on a bad team. He is strong, quick and has great hands. Plus, he seems to “rise” in big games.

A great player to take over as out 4th WR behind Nelson, Cobb and Jones.

With the 90th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
David Quessenberry C/G San Jose State
6’5” 294 lbs. 5.15/40

A player on the rise. Three year starter who played well and turned heads at the Senior Bowl. Athletic and mobile, he’s a good player to take over for EDS as the swing, backup, interior OL. A few years down the road, after he bulks up a little, he’ll probably take over the reigns for EDS as the starter.

With the 126th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
A.J. Klein ILB Iowa State
6'2" 244 lbs. 4.71/40

I can’t take this guy out of our mocks, he might be the best option at SILB for us in the whole draft.
AJ Klein might be the perfect fit for stopping the read option and pistol offense. He's smart, athletic, fast and most importantly diagnosis and reacts to plays well.

Another added bonus is he grew up in Kimberly, Wisconsin. But the fact he offers a way to stop the mobile QB is what makes him such an attractive prospect at this spot.

With the 134th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
Denard Robinson ? Michigan
5’10” 196 lbs. 4.55/40

An electric playmaker who does wonders when he gets the ball in his hand. The only problem is what position does he play? Can we convert him to WR? RB? Return Specialist? I don’t have an answer to this, but I do think there are certain players who are so fast and athletic they can play several positions in the NFL. To me, Robinson is that player. Honestly, I see a returner in him, when I watched him run at Michigan, his elusiveness, and ability to make guys miss in space, coupled with the way he set up blocks reminded me of a returner. I'd like to start by trying him there.

In Round 4, he is worth taking a flier. He just might be the steal of the whole draft.

With the 164th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
Gilbert Pena NT Mississippi
6’2” 334 lbs 5.18/40

Massive, but athletic junior college transfer who many are crediting for the Rebels massive improvement in run defense this year. A great developmental prospect to groom behind Pickett - who, let’s face it is getting up there in age.

With the 182nd pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
Quanterus Smith DE/OLB Western Kentucky
6’5” 249 lbs. 4.69/40

Sack monster that many are projecting as a 3-4 OLB at the next level. Really got at the QB at Western Kentucky. Unfortunately he tore his ACL at the end of the year. Still, TT has demonstrated a willingness to take highly talented players coming off injuries in the past. If he works out TT looks like a genius, if not, we are only talking about a 6th round pick here.

With the 210th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
Tonio Celetto NT Humboldt State
6’3” 320 lbs.

Division III talent who is technically sound and excels at eating blockers and moving piles, but did not play against elite talent. Still, given his strength, speed and athleticism, I would love to see Mike Trgovac develop him.

Probably a PS candidate, and probably will have to do that for a few years, but after that, look out!

I like the skills guys at their slots, but that's about it. I'm either not high on the others or not all that familiar with them.

I really like it but the franchise tag deadline has already passed so there is no way we can deal Jennings to another team. Really like Patton and Eifert in those slots if there available.

The pick he acquired in the Jennings trade is gone, looks like he just forgot to remove the wording.

Looks like I've seen this before. A lot of familiarity and popular names on there.

Same mistake I made with copying and pasting my older mocks. Very Happy

And I like it. Like all the mocks I've posted, it has a lot of the same players with a few differences here and there, but me likey just the same.

Embarassed Ya, I pulled a daintrain. Laughing

LIS earlier, this is a "what I am thinking" mock where I have done my homework and feel this is the direction the team should go.

Now, that being said, not going after Canty and Jackson - who I do think will be Packers when it is all said and done - will greatly change this mock.

You cut Finley and drat Eifert - check.
You cut AJ Hawk but don't resign Brad Jones - are you assuming Klein is the guy or Manning or Smith. I'm not so sure that risk is worth saving Hawk money, not after saving a bunch on Finley and experiencing the rash of injuries at ILB last year.
As for you draft great job and your key free agent pickups great job. I think Denard Robinson is a bit of an "ehh" pick but if you are thinking returner I get it.
The Packers are at what about 22 million in cap space - so extend Mathews and extend Rodgers and maybe the team has about 15 million to sign the RFA's, rookies and yes probably guys like Jackson and Canty.

~Honestly, I didn't know that Brad Jones was a FA this year, however, as an ILB, Jones is a better fit for Bishop's position. Hawk's is the thumper or "FB of the defense," which doesn't suit Jones well.
~I anticipate our starting SILB next year will be either a DP or Robert Francois.
~LIS in other posts, Hawk has been a good player for us, but against the read option and pistol offense, he looks slow and indecisive. Now that weakness has been exposed and we are going to get a heavy dose of it. I am looking for a quicker, more decisive thumper to slide into Hawk's spot.
~I agree we could make a big splash in FA, and as close as we are to a championship, this is the year to do it.
~Those who have followed me on here know I am typically anti-FA. In this instance though, I think there is value in both Jackson and Canty and we should go for both of them.

How are Rodgers and Matthew's extensions only going to cost us 7mil of cap space?

I really don't mind this draft at all but we'd have a massive logjam along the D-line if we were to go this route, especially bringing Canty in. I think the Quessenberry and Klein picks are a bit early and you don't address the Safety position at all; I'd switch out the Pena pick for someone like Earl Wolff. I really like the Denard Robinson pick; he could totally open up our offense. Those are really my only qualms here. Also, not to nitpick, but Patton runs a 4.53, not a 4.58.

Assuming that Rodgers and Matthews both get extended, I'd have to imagine that the bulk of Rodgers' cap hit will be backloaded in a deal that he likely won't see much like the way Joe Flacco's contract was set up. Clay Matthews, on the other hand, is going to see a contract pretty similar to what Tamba Hali got from the Chiefs.

Good draft just being nitpicky but Francois is a FA too, so that should be addressed. Of course it shouldn't cost too much to sign him.

~See I don't see us that deep at DL. I see us with four RDEs (counting Canty), a starter at NT and LDE and not a lot of depth behind either position.
~Quessenberry and Klein are a tad - and I emphasize tad - early, but what do you want? We have needs on this team and there are very few players who fit either position. If we are gonna address these positions, we are gonna need to reach a bit.
~My friend, if you are expecting TT to address EVERY position in an offseason, you are crazy. That's not how TT operates. Besides that, I have high hopes for Jerron McMillian, and think with the second year bump, McMillian will turn into a fine player. MD Jennings is more than a capable backup, and Burnett is more than fine at SS.

No, we won't.

Thompson doesn't reach. He situates himself where the value is best. If that means moving down, so be it. But he won't reach for the sake of filling a hole.
