Note: Premium picks consist of 1st & 2nd rounders.

Oakland Raiders:
2004

1st Rd: LT Robert Gallery, Iowa
2nd Rd: OC Jake Grove, Virginia Tech
2005
1st Rd: Fabian Washington CB Nebraska
2nd Rd: Stanford Routt CB Houston
2006
1st Rd: Michael Huff SS Texas
2nd Rd: Thomas Howard OLB Texas El Paso
2007
1st Rd: JaMarcus Russell QB Louisiana State
2nd Rd: Zach Miller TE Arizona State
2008
1st Rd: Darren McFadden RB Arkansas
2nd Rd: No Pick

So, to recap… In Ryan’s 1st gig running the show on defense in 5 years and 9 premium picks the Raiders selected 4 defenders, 3 of which were defensive backs.

Cleveland Browns
2009

1st Rd: Alex Mack OC Cal
2nd Rd: Brian Robiskie WR Ohio State
2nd Rd: Mohamed Massaquoi WR Georgia
2nd Rd: David Veikune DE Hawaii
2010
1st Rd: Joe Haden CB Florida
2nd Rd: TJ Ward SS Oregon
2nd Rd: Montraio Hardesty RB Tennessee

So, to recap… In Ryan’s 2nd stint as defensive coordinator in two years the Browns possessed 7 premium picks in which 3 were defenders, 2 of which were defensive backs.

Dallas Cowboys
2011

1st Rd: Tyron Smith OT Southern Cal
2nd Rd: Bruce Carter LB North Carolina
2012
1st Rd: Mo Claiborne CB Louisiana State
2nd Rd: No Pick (Pick was traded in order to move up to draft Claiborne)

So, to recap… In Ryan’s last stop as a defensive leader in two years the Cowboys made 3 premium picks in which 2 were defenders, one of which was a defensive back. The Cowboys also traded an additional premium pick during this time to acquire that defensive back so in essence he is two premium picks within himself.

In conclusion:
Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator…
Years: 9
Teams: 3
Premium Picks that were defensive players: 10
Of those premium defenders, how many were defensive backs: 8
Number of 1st round defenders taken: 4
Of those, how many were defensive backs: 4

Do you believe where there’s smoke… there’s FIRE!!!

If so, go ahead and make your pick…

1. Dee Milliner CB Alabama

2. Kenny Vaccaro SS Texas

3. Jonathan Banks CB Mississippi State

4. Desmond Trufant CB Washington

5. Xavier Rhodes CB/FS Florida State

6. Matt Elam SS Florida

7. Jonathan Cyprien SS Florida International

8. Logan Ryan CB Rutgers

9. Eric Reid SS Louisiana State

10. David Amerson CB/FS North Carolina State

HM: Jordan Poyer CB Oregon State

It's a pattern I already brought up so expect DB's to be his main focus when free agency and the draft starts.

I must have missed it...

So what ya thinking solution? Another double dip like in Dallas last season with Carr in free agency and Claiborne through the draft?

I think they'd love Milliner to fall but won't trade up for him. Could very well set their sights on Vaccaro at 15. I'm not sold on anyone else from the DB's outside these two at 15 but maybe we trade back?

Could we go new trend... big long corners? Sign Sean Smith in free agency then trade back in the draft and take David Amerson? Go the Seahawk route...

After looking this up I'm convinced that it will be a defensive back. Either by staying put at 15 or trading up or down, if Ryan has anything to say about it, it will be a secondary player.

I like Trufant, Rhodes, and Elam better than Vaccaro. Most people will disagree though. If we were to trade back, I could see Cyprien sneaking into the late first. Very deep CB/S draft in the jest 3 rounds.

Elam and Smith is what I want. Elam can play SS or FS.

You've got to relize that in that time he had 19 first or second round picks. Only 9 were on defense (I'm counting Claiborne as one). About half like it should be. Only 6 were DBs. Thats LESS than one third. I definatly think we will get a DB, but I not sure it will be first round.

Also this is Sean Payton's team not Rob Ryan's. I'm not at all conviced that our first pick will definatly be a DB. There is a chance just like getting a LB, DL, or OL.

If we do go secondary with the first pick I want Elam. I've been saying that since the end of the season. Elam is very physical good in coverage, but what I love is how he can play the nickel corner. He did every time Florida ran a nickel package. This would allow a saftey to come on (Quddus) any chance for Quddus to take the field I'm happpy.
