A league source tells CSN Bay Area it's "no certainty" the 49ers will use the franchise tag on free agent FS Dashon Goldson for the second consecutive offseason.
Keeping Goldson is expected to be a priority for the 49ers, but the sides will continue to negotiate a long-term deal ahead of the March 4 deadline to apply the franchise tag. Coming off arguably the best season of his career, Goldson would be due $7.5 million it tagged for the second straight year.

Hey! I feel so cheated! We had to pay 7.7 mil to tag him in FFMD. That's it! I'm making calls to.. er... nah, forget it. Suppose I can scrounge up that chump change underneath the couch cushions.

FRANCHISE TAG PRIMER: PREDICTIONS FOR ALL 32 TEAMS

5. Dashon Goldson, San Francisco 49ers: Coach Jim Harbaugh said the 49ers should "reward" Goldson with a long-term deal. That might come eventually, but we expect the tag to come first (Goldson was also tagged last year).

I know Dashon is known to gamble now and again.

Two questions do you guys think he should be playing strong safety and the second is, is he a liability in coverage?

Me personally i think Goldson is fine doing what he does.. the thing is as long as the other safety has his back when he gambles, but that really fits any number of schemes where players gamble. The main thing is Donte Whitner isnt a top speed guy, he's a solid player but if Goldson misses on his gambles Whitner doesnt have the speed to make up for it. Lot of times last year when they got burnt was mostly communication issues before the ball was snapped, players out of position and confusion on which player they needed to cover.

Thanks for the reply.

I have him going to us in a mock I just did and a few guys insist that he is a SS. I personally don't think so at all but figured I would get legit team fans view.

I think Dashon is versatile enough to play both spots. Fangio has often said our safeties were interchangeable, so the notion of FS vs SS is pointless, really. It could have made a difference if franchise tag numbers differed for FS and SS, but all safeties are lumped together there as well. I think what determines a player's role on a team is his skill set, not whatever a position is pidgeon-holed to be. Maybe in the 90s. Not so much anymore.

You basically hit the nail on the head. I don't know why Tampa fans would think Dashon's strictly a SS. We've talked about moving him there a couple times, but he's always played FS for us.

There is nothing wrong with his coverage abilities, and he improved big time in that area from last season. You could say gambled more in the past, but this season for the most part he did a good job of toning that down.

Baalke should offer him 5 ys $38 mill with a lot of it coming as a signing bonus (roster bonus?) that kicks in by the 3rd season, if he doesn't take it then we franchise him and select a safety with one of our first 3 picks. Goldson is good but he is not a top notch safety, he misses too many tackles and he often takes poor angles.

I'd rather see Whitner gone than Dashon, honestly. I think that he's actually a decent tackler, although he compromises it for a big-hit at times. That's important for attitude though as it gives energy to the rest of the defense. The fact that he can play both FS and SS would allow us some flexibility if we were to draft a safety as well.

I agree with this... and don't mind repeating that I am intrigued with drafting a CB and moving Culliver to S. (that way Culliver can play FS and Goldson can shift to SS on at least a 1 year tag) I think this could be a good move for our pass defense.. but maybe not... who can really say?

We could then draft a CB to compete with Cox for the nickel job and groom a S for next year. I love the plan but highly doubt it will happen. I really think that if Goldson is able to sign elsewhere, we will probably sign a vet and draft someone to groom/take over the job midway through the season unless that vet is someone like William Moore.
