That was a classy thing for the Bears organization to do; hats off to them for caring about a players future.

This is the time of year when football decisions aren’t made in a vacuum, and money can matter more than anything that happens between the lines.

So while it seems obvious that the Bears would want to do what it takes to keep defensive tackle Henry Melton, doing so would require them to tie up nearly a third of the salary cap on four defensive starters, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

They’d obviously prefer to get a long-term deal with Melton before they had to use the $8.3 million franchise tag, but that’s far from a given.

Bears linebacker Nick Roach might have found a chance to play in the middle, for a team with a need there. According to Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun-Times, Roach has agreed to join the Raiders.

@AdamSchefter: Bears announced they were unable to sign LB Brian Urlacher and are moving in another direction.

Probably not that big of a surprise to anyone here but it makes me wonder about a few things..
1. How much is he possibly asking for?
2. Will Rick get more aggressive with his pursuit of Urlacher or does this scare him off because of the $ issues?
3. If he doesn't come here where do the rest of you think he will end up?
4. What's next for Da Bears?

The talk that 2011 first-round draft pick Gabe Carimi is in danger of getting cut will only heat up after Carimi skipped the first day of Organized Team Activities on Monday. Carimi was the only Bear who was eligible to participate who didn’t show up, according to ESPNChicago.com.

I love how highly picked NFC North tackles keep busting or not living up to expectations.

Except for Kalil Very Happy

The Bears have reached a contract agreement with first-round pick Kyle Long, the club said Friday night. The No. 20 overall pick, Long (6-6, 311) is expected to compete for a starting role at guard on a new-look offensive line for Chicago.

Long has relatively little experience as offensive lineman — a mere two collegiate seasons — but the Bears are intrigued by his potential.

yikes. a 1st round picked who is expected to compete for playing time, is very inexperienced at the position, and is "intriguing."

seems like a reach to me.

I don't think you should consider Long a .... long shot ..... to be effective if he was graded by pro scouts.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the Bears will retire Mike Ditka’s number during a Dec. 9 Monday Night Football appearance against the Cowboys at Soldier Field.

Ditka coached the team to its only Super Bowl title 27 years ago, but was a tremendous player for them prior to that, playing for their 1963 NFL title team. The 73-year-old ESPN analyst will be the 14th Bearts player to have his number retired, the first since - Butkus and Gale Sayers. That’s the most retired numbers of any NFL team.

Though we don’t know how many arrests it takes to get a player cut by the Bears, the answer apparently isn’t two. In the wake of his second arrest of the offseason, the Bears haven’t parted ways with tight end Evan Rodriguez. Instead, they’ve issued on his behalf a statement expressing remorse for Friday’s alleged DUI.

Rodriguez: “I am deeply sorry for the incident that occurred the other night. I want to apologize to the entire Bears organization, my teammates, coaches and Bears fans everywhere. I realize that I made a very poor decision. I know that more is expected of me and that I let a lot of people down that are counting on me. I will make positive changes in my life so that this doesn’t happen again.”
