2013 Mock Offseason Post Rob Ryan Hiring

2013 Cap Room: -14.7 Million

DE, Will Smith, $10 Million
S, Roman Harper, $5.25 Million
RT, Zach Strief, $2.225 Million
LB, Will Herring, $1.5 Million
LB, David Hawthorne, $4 Million (I'd be all for keeping him, but I am pretending to be RR and I think he'd move Tez inside with Lofton and cut Thorne)
K, Garret Hartley, $2.166 Million
LB, Chris Chamberlain, $1.05 Million
NT, Brodrick Bunkley, $3.7 Million

Savings: $37.791 Million

Take into account we are $14.7 Million over the cap, this gives us $21.091 Million in cap room.

NT, Terrance Knighton, 3 yr/$10.2 Million ($2.293 Million Cap Hit)

Spendings: $6.293 Million

Cap Room: $7.979

While this is not the most ideal for going into the draft, all you really need is $7 million. This puts us on a tight leash, but it's Mickey's fault for putting us in this position. I had to clean up a big mess.

Trades:

-Chris Ivory and 4th (111) round pick to the St. Louis Rams for their 2nd round pick ( 48 ).

-1 (15) to Houston for 1 (27) and 2 (59). They move up to get Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU, and steal him from Chicago and Cincy.

-2 (59) to Cleveland for 3 (70) and 6 (166)

-7 (207) and 5 (143) to Arizona for 4 (103) and 7 (199)

Draft:

1. S, Matt Elam, Florida

We REALLY need help in our secondary and Elam is the best safety in this draft. Most people rate Vaccaro over Elam, but I think Elam is better. With a good coaching staff, (which we have), he can be prevented from his boneheaded mistakes. He can really lay the wood, and he is good in coverage. Perfect prospect to replace Roman Harper.

2. Phillip Thomas, FS, Fresno State

He is a good FS prospect. I like what I see from him. Jenkins can play his contract year, then this guy can take over.

3 a). BW Webb, CB, William & Mary

Our Secondary needs help, and he can come in behind Greer and Robinson and be a real good #3. Can become #2 when Greer retires.

3 b). Chris Faulk, OT, LSU

He was REALLY good until his injury happened. We can groom him in to be a cheap replacement for Bushrod when his contract runs out.

4. Tyrann Mathieu, KR/PR/DB, LSU

We can use him as a 4th corner, and he can return punts and kicks, so we don't risk our precious Sproles getting hurt. He can really be a #1 corner, if he wasn't so boneheaded. Hopefully he has changed and works wonders.

6. Caleb Sturgis, K, Florida

Had a really efficient kicking career at UF. Hartley is such a struggle. He can come in and replace him.

I know, there isn't alot of picks, but, we needed defensive help REALLY badly. To get alot of talent, I had to move up with alot of our picks. I tried to make it as realistic as possible, and it is my first ever mock. I also had to clean up Mickey's mess, take that into consideration, that is why I couldn't sign many big FA's. But, that's it.

STARTING Depth Chart:

QB: Drew Brees
HB: Mark Ingram
FB: Jed Collins
WR: Marques Colston
WR: Lance Moore
LT: Jermon Bushrod
LG: Ben Grubbs
C: Brian De La Puente
RG: Jahri Evans
RT: Charles Brown

DE: Akiem Hicks
NT: Terrance Knighton
DE: Cameron Jordan

OLB: Junior Galette
ILB: Martez Wilson
ILB: Curtis Lofton
OLB: Anthony Spencer

CB: Jabari Greer/BW Webb
FS: Malcolm Jenkins
SS: Matt Elam
CB: Patrick Robinson/ Tyrann Mathieu

K: Caleb Sturgis
P: Thomas Morstead
KR: Tyrann Mathieu
PR: Tyrann Mathieu

Reasoning for one of my 'questionable' decisions:

-Cutting Zach Strief. He is not much better than Charles Brown IMO. And, Brown is A LOT cheaper than Strief.

Thanks for reading, lol.

Also worth noting, I want Dion Jordan as much as the next guy, but in my mock draft I have him going at 9 to the Jets. He just won't be there IMO.

Really like it, but you could save a lot money! Rafael Bush is an ERFA, so you could sign him to his tender ($615k) and both Galette and DLP are RFA. Their tenders would have a maximum cap hit of around 2 million (1st round tender)!

See, you can tell I'm new to this. :p I did not know any of that. Thanks! I'll remember that next time I do a mock offseason, Mickey needs to learn to save money. :p

I like it, but I doubt we'd draft two safeties with our first two picks.

Well, next to NT and OLB that is our biggest need. And, I addressed both OLB and NT in FA. So, really, our only needs are safeties which we can get there. We need some corner depth as well, which is adressed later. But, I think p-Rob and Greer are very efficient corners and can get it done.

Also, some updates were made. I made a specific kicker, (Caleb Sturgis), after I read up on his career. And, I changed Swearinger to Phillip Thomas, because apparently Swearinger is a SS like Elam.

You kind of gutted your LBs. Can't just have starters, you need backups too...

I disagree with lots of your moves but I appreciate the effort. It makes no sense to cut Bunkley or Hawthorne since almost all of their income this year is dead cap space. Brown is not almost as good as Strief...not even close. He's a huge bust.. We don't have any depth. A trade down, though nice, is impossible to predict.

Restructuring Brees contract is just kicking the can down the Road. His worst contract years are ahead of us. Might as well just bite the bullet now.
