Mack Brown has never been a great coach, I think this is universally known. He was always heralded as a nails recruiter but I really think that the Texas brand did 70% of the work, he just gets in good with the mamas.
That being said, I think the success of VY and Colt have led to this mess. I'm still a pretty new longhorn but from what I've heard this program oozed complacency and entitlement just riding on the back of a transcendent quarterback and recklessly recruiting "the best" with no real evaluations. I would argue that if he did not stumble upon VY or Colt, the 9-10 win seasons would still be here with the talent we pull/pulled in and he would retire as one of the greatest UT coaches ever, just with no championships. Or maybe he does win one with Jevan Snead or Chance Mock at the helm, we'll never know.
I will say I hate the fact that he overreacts like a mother. Watch Bama run all over you, "That's it we're a power running team now". Watch WVU/Baylor/OU shred us with speed, "That's it we're an uptempo speed team now". Make up your mind and stick with it, sheesh.
Oh by the way, I grew up an aggie fan haha. I hated Vince and Colt and loved watching A&M upset UT every now and then on Thanksgiving. That all changed when I got my full ride to Texas and A&M offered me something like $4000. |
Mack Brown turned UNC into a top 10 program while he was there, which takes tremendous coaching, so I don't know if I would say Mack Brown isn't a great coach. And he recruited well there, so I don't know if it's necessarily just that he's at Texas. But I think college football has changed in his time at Texas and I don't think he's been able to change along with it very well. |
From what I've heard and seen he's a very hands off, CEO style head coach who delegates almost all responsibility to his assistants. He runs for the most part a fluid, clean, successful program. But the most football relevant new bites I've heard from him are "We need to play more physical" or "We need to run the ball more" which leads me to believe he just relays his vision to his assistants and lets them do work. I'd love for him to have a playcard in his hand on gameday but he just gets into his stance and watches the game and claps.
He did pioneer the early recruiting, so that helps. But he is falling behind with his reluctance to offer juniors and sophomores (I agree with him on this btw) _________________ "You may all go to Hell, and I will go to Texas."

Last time I checked we was winning. How in the hell we lost by 3?
I didnt go to the game tonight because I'm studying for a quiz, but damn thats messed up that we lost to Tulane.
Daniel House has been very good for us as a freshman. He is our 2nd best guy (behind Joe Young). Next year we will be much improved since our other 4 star recruit Chicken Knowles is back eligible (he couldnt play this season). I still think Dickey needs to go. I give him props recruiting, but as a coach he is terribad. _________________

Dude you should've seen it. Collapse in the last 4 minutes. Tulane put on a full court pressure and stole the ball 4 times and hit a few 3s. It was like 11 points in 9 second
I liked Daniel House, dudes athletic as a mug. _________________

I always look on Coogfans.com, and the reactions when we lose are freaking priceless. There were like 5 different "fire dickey" threads in the bball board. _________________

Because they are incredibly young and raw,
Or,
Because college basketball is stupid.
Take your pick. _________________ Welcome to Houston, DeAndre Hopkins! |

Recent article about Manziel taking all his classes online makes so much sense now. Gives him more time to schmooze with celebrities and go hard on a bi nightly basis. And his excuse is the fame on campus was too much to deal with. Isn't every starting quarterback on every notable college team instantly BMOC and hounded by fellow students and fans? Maybe it's different in College station.
He's hella good, hope he keeps his head on straight through all this (Although a certain part of me wants him to fail miserably, not sure what it is). _________________ "You may all go to Hell, and I will go to Texas."
