Not really, he could be a good rotational guy on a vet minimum type deal but no team is going to say, "That Bart Scott signing really put us over the edge." _________________

Well we had Barrett Ruud as our starting ILB by the end of last year. _________________

He's a good soldier that's about it at this point in his career. |

Yes and no. Ever since the disastrous 2007 season Woody has pretty much given Tannenbaum free reign to spend his money. In that time the Jets have spent a lot of money and picks on:
2007
RB Thomas Jones (Swapped 2nd's with Chicago and gave him a 4-year 25
million dollar deal)
DE Kenyon Coleman (4 years 20 million)
2008
QB Brett Favre (Pick + 1 year 12 million dollar deal)
LG Alan Faneca (5-years 40 million)
RT Damien Woody (5-years 30 million)
NT Kris Jenkins (3rd and 5th round picks + 5-year for 35 million)
OLB Calvin Pace (6 years 42 million)
2009
QB Mark Sanchez (Traded up for him in the draft and gave him two big contracts)
WR Braylon Edwards (3rd round pick)
ILB Bart Scott (5 years 40 million)
2010
WR Santonio Holmes (5th round pick + 5-year 45 million dollar deal)
2011
CB Antonio Cromartie (2nd round pick in 2010 + 4 years for 32 million in 2011).
They've also re-signed in that time, D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold, and David Harris to big contracts (as well as Revis at 4 years 46 million).
The thing is though, every single one of those deals was front loaded and allowed the Jets to move through these guys quickly. The issues compounded though from three giant cap mistakes:
1. Mark Sanchez's new contract mixed with his masterful regression.
2. Using the cap relief provided last off-season by the new Sanchez contract to sign Tim Tebow and LaRon Landry. Neither player can be seen as a weapon for Sanchez and even with how poorly he played, he had almost no weapons all year.
3. Guaranteeing deals via restructuring of several players (including Bart Scott and Darrelle Revis) as the Jets made an unsuccessful run at Nnamdi somugha in August 2011.
I don't think I'm missing anything here. The plan was always to make these moves thanks to front loaded deals, but those three things combined put the Jets in a much bigger hole then they should have been in. If the Jets had never made that run at Nnamdi, they probably would have parted ways with Bart Scott last season instead of this one. The biggest issue isn't getting under the cap, it's finding ways to bring in low-cost players who can actually contribute despite being bottom of the barrel signings.
It's a precarious off-season in New York. Tannenbaum did a lot of good, but those three major mistakes are probably what cost him his job. _________________

As a poster already noted, it seems highly possible that one or both of these guys could be on the Bills' radar soon because we now have Pettine as our DC. I've always thought Pace is overrated but Bart Scott could be of interest to me for the Bills for the veteran minimum.
Does he have ANYTHING left? The Bills would more than likely want to bring him in because of familiarity with the DC and for the veteran leadership more than anything. Also, it happens we are extremely weak at LB so anyone would help at this point. We're THAT bad at the position. I understand he's not good against the pass? Is he at least alright at stopping the run? While our defense needs to get better at defending the pass, our run defense was even worse and we could use a LB who can actually do something against the run and make a tackle.
So, does Scott have anything left to offer? I don't expect him to be nearly as good as he was (he was a pretty damn good LB just a couple seasons ago), nor do I even expect him to be a starter anymore but I wonder if he'd help our LB depth and provide some leadership to a team that needs it. |

Woo! I don't know why, but I loathe Eric Smith. Maybe I just hate the fact that he's still on the team despite being terrible _________________

1) ED Hartwell
2) Bart Scott
Dats craz |
Ed Hartwell injuries derailed him. Bart Scott was good when he first came to the Jets, but he got old and slowed down which happens. its not that he wasn't a good player and anyways he wasn't released yet, he may stay with the Jets if he takes a paycut but he can't stay at his current pay which is way too high. _________________

Now imagine how bad it is for us Jets fans
These were all necessary and planned moves. There was never any intention to pay them the numbers they were set up for.
They still have Scott to deal with, but the Jets should be able to clear almost $35-40M when they're done with cuts and restructures. |
