How would he fit as a LEO? Or would he just be a strong 3-4 OLB for us? |
We're not running a 3-4. I don't think he fits overly well as a LEO, but he's a good DE prospect. |
I thought there was a strong possibility of the switch...? |
No. Here's a post I made a few days ago on another forum (slightly edited):
| Quote: | The modified 4-3 Under that Gus Bradley ran in Seattle isn't really "basically a 3-4"
It's still a 4-3 front, but it has a mix of 3-4 and 4-3 concepts. I also suspect that we'll run a variety of fronts with multiple concepts.
This is not a depth chart, but a list of prominent guys we have and where they could fit
LEO: Jason Babin, Andre Branch
DT (3T): C.J. Mosley, Tyson Alualu, D'Anthony Smith
DT (not really a NT, but sized as a NT and moves around among 3T, 0T, 1T - should be big guy who can also get pass penetration - Knighton would fit here, but not sold he will be back): Jeris Pendleton - could have Mosley and Alualu as two interior DTs again if necessary
RE (5T): Tyson Alualu, Austen Lane, MAYBE Jeremy Mincey
To be honest, I see Mincey as a bit of a misfit, but we should run enough normal base 4-3 with him at either LE or RE to where it won't matter. He could also do well enough at the 5T spot in the 4-3 Under considering how well he is against the run to begin with and his size (~280 IIRC). I could see Lane playing some LEO too, but I think with Babin, Branch, and possibly another LEO selected in the draft that there's no reason to do that unless we don't select one in the draft.
If Branch improves or we get someone with a lot of upside in the draft (or we keep Babin and he is our primary LEO) then we could see quite of improvement in pass rushing assuming health is not a concern (especially for Lane who has made strides).
I would prefer to add one more LEO in the draft because I want to be able to rotate guys in and out and move them around. That versatility, depth, and ability to stay fresh can go a long way. We'd have 5 at least solid options at DE (Babin, Branch, Draft Pick, Lane, Mincey) and 6 if you count Alualu when he is kicked out to that 5T spot. I don't know if Selvie or Chick will be back so I did not include them. Chick and Davis are LEO options and Selvie is a bit of a misfit like Mincey.
Here is more information on the 4-3 Under: http://trojanfootballanalysis.com/?p=308
MAIN difference to keep in mind: rather than a 4 man front with a 5th player as the LEO (as demonstrated in that link IIRC), it is a 4 man front with one of the 4 as the LEO. The LEO would generally be a pass rushing linebacker in a 3-4 or is a 4-3 DE that is best suited at the 9T. Having Babin play LEO would allow him to play at the 9T position where he succeeds without running the 9-wide which is a system that leaves you susceptible to the run. With the modified 4-3 Under, that susceptibility to the run is accounted for with the bigger DT inside (in Seattle, this was Alan Branch) and a bigger DE in the 5T position or just one that is good against the run (in Seattle, this was Red Bryant - here, it would be Alualu, Lane, Mincey, etc.). As well, in the modified 4-3 Under, the extra LB is allowed to count for the run as there is now a 4-man front as opposed to 4 and the LB playing up front.
I hope that cleared a lot of it up. I tried to explain it as best as I could at this moment. |

I thought there was a strong possibility of the switch...? | No. We're running a typical 4-3 and a 4-3 under. The 4-3 under has elements of a 3-4 in it, but uses the LEO instead of a typical rush LB. There's other differences, but that's the main one. _________________

Barkevious Mingo is said to have added 15 pounds already this offseason and gotten faster doing so...next week's combine should be cash money for him. _________________

Probably, said he is around 245 now, playing sub 230 at LSU...hoped to be around 250 by combine week. _________________

I mean it's not that unreasonable if he's really working his butt off. I know some people who have put on weight like that from a program like p90x in 2-3 months. If he's really working himself and using legal supplements, it could be possible.
It just kinda lends itself to the idea of other stuff at work. _________________

Regardless, if he is, it'll be known during the Combine testing /shrug. But in 90 days since the End of the year, and how crappy the LSU S&C coach and weight program is, maybe he just needed professional help. _________________

Doctors give clear bill of health to Georgia LB Jarvis Jones. Med report will be sent to teams Thursday, should solidify top-10 pick. |

Spinal Stenosis doesn't magically go away. Actually , it's degenerative.
Why would USC doctors run off a player of his magnitude with a fake condition? I'm not buying it. _________________
