The Patriots are estimated to have between 16 to 18 million in cap space this offseason. At least $3.5 million will be diverted toward draft selections, leaving the team with somewhere between 12.5 and 15 million in free agency. How much the team will really have to work with remains extremely fluid, however, as multiple contracts (Mankins, Wilfork, Brady) could be restructured, cuts could be made (Fells, Gregory, Larsen, Cunningham, players near the bottom of the roster), and money could be recovered from the Jonathan Fanene deal (2.5 million in dead money). They also have their own free agents to resign.
With the fluidity of their cap situation in mind, I'd like to get some feedback on the potential cost of a number of free agents whom I think would help the team. This list does not include their big three (Welker, Vollmer, Talib) as I believe it to be a near certainty that all three are not resigned (I would deem Vollmer to be the most likely, and most important, to bring back). I also didn't include any offensive players because I think we should focus exclusively on defense, even if we let Welker walk (would rather address receiver through the draft).
Signing one or two of these guys would go a long way in solidifying the defense, and it would be good to know what their value would be if they hit the open market. Let me know what you think they'd go for.
