I think the notions of FS and SS don't mean much in today's NFL. Both safeties have to be able to do everything if they want to succeed. That means covering man, zone, playing in the box, hitting, reading the QB's eyes, etc. I don't really see how much Dashon's game would change if he switched position. |
I think you are partially correct in that you must do all things well but there is definitely preferred skill set for each position. Our SS is more of a in-box type who must tackle extremely well. Dashon can tackle and is physical but he is much better coming from 12-15 yards out rather than within steps of the LOS and having to deal with traffic. In our system he is an ideal FS. |
I don't think we use our SS in a certain way because it's position-specific, but rather because it's his strengths. If we "switched" Dashon to SS, we would still play him to his strengths. His biggest strength, as I see it, is sniping. I haven't watched many safeties around the league with much attention, but I think Goldson is one of the better safety in the league, at reading a running play from his (deep) safety position, and shooting to the line of scrimmage to make a tackle. That's what I call sniping. If he played in the box more, sure, he would still make that tackle. But it's a great luxury to have when a player can make a tackle at the LOS from his safety spot. Not having to play a safety in the box is like having the ability to rush only four guys to apply pressure. It's a very good luxury to have, and it allows you to run all sorts of coverages while still being strong against the run. He doesn't have to switch position anyway. I would like to see more designed "in the box" plays for Goldson. I'd like to see him blitz and hit the QB from the blindside. It's almost a guaranteed fumble. _________________

Yeah, but he's definitely not the "certain someone." _________________

***Update*** When Jim Harbaugh later was asked about Goldson and his desire for a long-term contract, he said: "He's somebody that I think you reward. Plays every game, can find the ball. You know that he's out there. The opposing offense knows that he's out there. ... He just does everything you want a safety to do. And you reward those types of people." |

Yeah I have definitely changed my stance on both safety's. Goldson has to stay, and Whitner has to be the guy we look to replace. Probably not able to this upcoming season, but possibly the following one. _________________

From what I have been seeing, my feelings wouldn't be hurt one iota if we dumped Whitner ( 4 mil gain on cap room ) and plugged Spillman in to battle a 2nd-4th round safety prospect.
I also would be very interested in if the coaches see a strong future at FS in a youngster like Trent Robinson. _________________

What Harbaugh says and what Baalke does are two separate things. It's just another prime example of Harbaugh praising one of his players in public. _________________

I think we all can safely agree with Harbaugh on this one though. And it's not like we haven't awarded players who have earned it. _________________ Welcome to the 9ers Q!

I think we can all safely believe that what oldman says about believing what Harbaugh says to the media is believable. _________________

Hey guys, with how solid the draft this year is at the safety position and the huge contracts possibly coming to players like Kaepernick, Anthony Davis, Crabtree, Iupati, Aldon Smith all projected fa's in 2015, do you think Golston is actually given a huge contract?
Would it be wise to "save" that money and draft a safety this year? _________________
