I've gone through our cap situation yesterday and if I'm not mistaking, we could save 12,5 million (2 million dead money) by releasing Smith and 7.6 million (500k dead money) by releasing Vilma. Others I would release:
TE David Thomas, would save us $1.7 Million (500k dead money)
LB Will Herring, would save us $1.6 Million (333k dead money)
In case of our two safeties, trading Harper would result in $3.5 million dead money and would free up $3.6 million in cap space. Jenkins would save us around $3.7 million and would result in $50k dead money.
Hope I didn't make anything wrong here... |

Just a quick cap calculation:
We are currently 14.7 million over the cap (according to bleacherreport).
Those are players we are consider moving or releasing them and their respective cap number we could save:
David Hawtorne - $1.7 Million ($ 3 million dead money)
Will Smith - $12.5 Million ($2 million dead money)
Jonathan Vilma - $8 Million ($500k dead money)
David Thomas - $1.7 Million ($500k dead money)
Will Herring - $1.6 Million ($333k dead money)
Jay Richardson - $715k
We could save $24.515 Million by making these moves and would be under the cap by $11.515 Million. This also includes $6.333 Million in dead money
We will also save some money due to this 51 rule and could trade either Thomas (saves us $2.5 million) or Sproles (saves us $2.25 million). |

If we save 1.7 million, but have to take on 3 million of dead cap, is it really worth even getting rid of Hawthorne? Might as well keep him unless we get good compensation.
Also what do the numbers look on Jahri Evans if we were to trade him out of curiosity, don't think we will but ti's something good to know IMO. Same with Jabari Greer. _________________

For Hawthorne I thought the same when I saw those numbers...
Trading Evans would result in a $6 million cap penalty and we would only save around $ 3 million. Greer would give us nearly $4 million in dead money and free up only $1.5 million cap space... |

Brees, I agree, Graham though, I wouldn't automatically say no, but the trade has to be really good. Right now the thing keeping me from wanting to say yes to that trade is the fact that Hali has a big cap number while Graham is almost nothing, which is a big factor in this IMO. |
THe only trade I'd even consider for Graham from the Chiefs is this...
Chiefs
1st round pick
3rd round pick
OLB Justin Houston (Not Hali)
Saints
TE Jimmy Graham |

Without naming teams, what were some of the offers? I'm guessing a 2nd or like 2 3rds _________________

No way would I get rid of Hawthorne. Considering the dead money...it just isn't worth it. God forbid we don't improve our SOLB situation and Wilson has to start there. Then Hawthorne is the guy at SILB. And good thing because he is probably the best coverage LB on the team outside of Castillas who is too small for full time SILB.
At worst, the Saints have to pay him the extra $1.7 million on his contract but the Saints get a good backup. |
