Given that Nick Fairley played pretty well this year, and the amount of money Ndamukong Suh is making I feel pretty comfortable saying that defensive tackle will not be the position that is selected early on in the draft. Add in Sammie Lee Hill whose a RFA, and it seems ridiculous that the Lions would draft another defensive tackle in the top 15 picks.
On the other hand, Cliff Avril is set to walk as a free agent and given the cap concerns the Lions have it doesn't seem prudent to give him almost 13 million when guys like Mathew Stafford, Calvin Johnson, and Ndamukong Suh eat up most of your cap space. |
I agree. The Star love comes from those that envision moving Suh to DE which I personally think wouldn't be the smart way to go.
It makes sense to draft a DE here for the Lions as does CB.
My problem is I don't see the available DE's as truly elite prospects. Perhaps I'm wrong but the draft seems lacking in top flight talent although there is great depth at certain positions.
With that in mind I would prefer to see the Lions draft Warmack here. I know all about the positional value theories etc. but my view of the other top prospects coupled with the rookie cap makes taking a guard at the five spot much more palatable. The Lions pass blocking is satisfactory but to often peterman and Raiola are on their heels and Stafford has no pocket to step into. In addition the Lions keep wasting picks on running backs yet don't have the horsepower in the middle to effectively run block.
You make a very valid point about Avril and the Lions cap situation. He's a 7 million dollar a year DE but somebody is going to throw a wad of cash at him and Detroit would be foolish to pay that type of money for him. That gives more importance to the DE selection and of course they should be able to still get the big Kentucky mauler in the second.
In your view how good do you rate the top DE's in this draft?
By the way, once again I appreciate all your efforts in providing thoughts and opinions on the draft. You do an excellent job each year. _________________

Too high for a guard. The Titans need a playmaker on D and Sheldon Richardson should be the pick. _________________

I don't know about deserves to, but I definitely think we're more likely to see three or four QBs going in the first round than one or two. It's too valuable of a position. _________________

Wilson is at best a middle of the league game manager, and thats if he ever figures out how to read a defense, not make terrible decisions, and you somehow feel he is clear of the concussion issues.
Mid 2nd rounder, going #1 overall. |

Love the Terrance Williams pick. If it's Williams, Short, Hopkins...I'm happy. I just can't stomach the thought of an ILB at the spot now. _________________

I don't see anyway that Arizona passes on Geno Smith at #7. Just don't see it. Arians has twice been involved with offenses having high levels of success with a rookie QB (Roethlisberger and Luck).
Considering the LT situation draft wise, I don't see us passing on Geno there. _________________ Patrick Peterson - 92 targets, 40 catches allowed, 602 yards, 6 TD's, 7 INT's

I believe the only way we don't draft Geno is if Arizona gets him. I'm hoping we trade up for him |
