Here is a list of teams and who they interviewed at the east west game today. 49ers interviewed Notre Dame safety Zeke Motta and SMU running back Zach Line. Dont know anything about either one but its interesting to see them talking with a running back. Im not surprised about the safety. Obviously these are extremely early talks but worth keeping an eye on. |
They interviewed the RB from SMU, but we don't know what the questions were. Maybe they were asking him all he knew about Margus Hunt. |
Yeah, I remember when the 49ers drafted Aldon Smith someone asked Maiocco (I think) if Jim/Trent were at the Mizzou pro day and his response was, "Yes, but everyone assumed they were there for Blaine Gabbert."
2 things: 1) You'll see a lot of smoke screens and stuff like that around this time. 2) I'm so glad we didn't waste a pick on Blaine Gabbert |
I tell you, when I heard "Missouri", I was ready to cry. Then I was a little WTFed. Before the end of the night, I was happy.
Since yayareaninerfan seems to think Zach Line is a bit of a tweener.. our staff does like tweeners. Maybe there's something to it. |
49ers do like tweeners and Line seems like a interesting FB option but i guess its also a possibility its a smoke screen for Hunt but its also insulting to Line to land an interview with an NFL team only to be asked questions about a teammate on the other side of the ball. _________________

Hey, it's a business. And if he proves to be a smart man, he might just score himself a bigger signing bonus as an undrafted free agent, if he doesn't get drafted. Right now, he seems like a practice squad type of guy. It wouldn't hurt him to play the game and not take it personally if he's used to get insight on one of his former teammates. _________________

How would you guys feel about drafting another WR with our 1st rounder? Not a guy like Woods, but if a guy like Terrance Williams or Keenan Allen. _________________

Also how do other feel about William Gholston? how people feel about taking him in the 3rd?
taking Margus Hunt and William Gholston both asking too much? |

We've sucked at drafting WR's with HarBaalke (Ronald Johnson, now AJ Jenkins both have caught a combined zero passes). I dunno if the WR coach is lobbying hard for these guys or what, but something we're doing needs to change. I wouldn't mind it because we can't count on Jenkins, Manningham is injured, Williams is a decent backup but nothing special, and Moss and Ginn are replaceable. But i don't trust Baalke to draft a decent WR with how bad Johnson and Jenkins have been for us. |

I think we should draft a WR and TE but I dont know about our first pick. I like Marquess Wilson in the 4th or later. Could be the Mike Williams (Tampa) of this draft _________________

Wouldn't mind at all. Gotta figure Ginn is gone.. then we have Moss' age and expect he's gone.. Kyle W and Rio are coming off of injuries and have only 1 year left on their deals. That leaves Crabtree and Jenkins... and Jeebus only knows when and what happens when Crabtree's ready for his bigger payday.
So yeah.. I have a couple WRs on my 1st rd short list... though the WR options in the middle of the draft looks pretty worthwhile to wait for. _________________

I wouldn't mind if we took a TE or WR. I think though that DE is our biggest need. We could also use another really good CB and it would sure be nice to have another pass rusher. We get decent pressure on QBs, but more would always be good. I guess it's still not clear what we're doing with GOldson or how good the guys behind him are. So S could be anther need. _________________

Hunter is about the only wr i would consider with our first. I've never been a huge fan of taking wide receivers in the first round unless I really feel there is a large difference between them and the rest of the field. I just think there's a lot of wide receiver talent in the middle rounds that you can get away with drafting instead. I like building the trenches in the early rounds. If there isn't a clear need, or if there isn't a player worth drafting at a need position when you pick, i think you go BPA. Is there going to be that big of a difference between someone like Allen and then someone like Jarick Rogers in the bottom of 2 top of 3? enough of a difference to draft that much higher? I'd prefer to go d-line at 1 (unless Kenny Vaccaro is available), bpa at 2 (would not be opposed to double dipping on the d-line) of safety if a good one falls to us (TJ mcdonald, perhaps?), and then wr with one of our picks in the third and maybe again in the 4th or 5th, with an OLB in 3/4th. I'd like us to grab a kicker in the 6/7th, along with a developmental qb in there. _________________

Everything I'm reading about gholston is that he will be no higher then a 4th rounder due to lack of production and pass rush moves. He has the physical attributes but just isn't polished enough to be a high pick.
One guy I'm sort of interested in for a 5th or 6th round pick is Wes Horton. I like his size and I like what I'm hearing out of the shrine game practices. I'm starting my preliminary mock and he's a candidate for a low round pick for me.
Also....
Who is better
Dustin Hopkins or Caleb sturgis?? One of these guys should be one of our 6th round picks. Who would you take? I like sturgis' production but I like Hopkins leg power. _________________

I don't like gholston either. I'd like john simon in the third if we are looking de there. He has a great motor. He can't play olb in the NFL, so he'd be a straight end, but he's got a non stop motor and was far more disruptive than people are aware this year. Does need to work on finishing though and actually getting to the qb (oddly, this was the same complaint on Justin his first few years in Cincinnati, where he was disruptive and had a great motor, but struggled in bringing down the qb).
As for kicker, I'd prefer Hopkins. His leg is stronger and its not like his accuracy was that much worse than sturgis. He seems to have overcome the really shaky accuracy issues he had as a freshman and sophomore. He will be solid on kickoffs because of that leg power too _________________
