A yes. Let's run the recent gimmick offense or better yet, lets just go back to 5 years ago's gimmick and run the wildcat.

No gimmicks please! They all have a shelf life.

Comparing it to the wildcat is plain stupidity. Wildcat was a trick play, the Pistol is a formation. Is the I-formation a gimmick in your opinion?

Allen said he would play the hot hand, in what world is McFadden's hand hot?

He touched Dennis Allen's seat before the game.

1) Why such heated discussion about a formation that is highly unlikely to be the base formation of the Raiders new OC?

2) The run-and-shoot was a formation that was ultimately determined to be logistically flawed. Hence it has a shelf-life unless used sparingly which is how I could see the pistol being implemented, sparingly. The shotgun works but not long-term as the base of an offense.

3) While a running QB is not required to run the pistol the teams that deploy it most often only target running QBs, obviously the creator knows what king of QB would be most effective in a pistol. Promoting the pistol is just a covet way to promote the QB you want behind center.

Two or three plays. Sure. Other than that. . . .pfft.

Uhm no it was a scheme. And as far as shotgun it's becoming more and more prevalent. The point is no team runs ace every down. No team uses shotgun every down. When you combine them with each other and variations and other formations then you have an offense you can use. Adding pistol looks in various concentrations makes your offense all that more formidable. It's not a gimmick, it's a formation.

Don't think it could be stated any better than this

You don't run ANY formation for the entire game. But there are some that you can use as staple formations more than others and the Pistol offense could be one of those staple formations

And in this day and age you see more and more offenses in the NFL resembling the spread offense with 3-4 WR sets

All the rules favor the offense now making the pistol offense a more viable offense than ever before
