Smith's salary and likely mid rd compensation makes it very unlikely. Why would Smith redo his contract and give up millions of dollars of his contract to come here? Would any of us. $7.5 million is a ton of money for a backup QB. |

I'm gonna be honest, I don't think this helps the rebuilding season at all.
It looks all like lateral moves to me.
I wouldn't trade for Smith/Boone/Ricky J. None of them seem like guys that would help this team improve significantly.
I like Allen/Reddick/Barner, but thats about it.
If you pick Allen, you trade Percy for another first and get a Cornerback or Middle Linebacker. If you pick Barner, you might as well trade Gerhart.
and if Joe Webb has ANY trade value, I'd look to trade him too. I know I'll get ripped for this, but he's exactly like Tim Tebow, minus being left handed. They aren't much of a passer, but are excellent running the ball and creating lanes for the RB by confusing the defense with the zone read. _________________

More will come tomorrow... but if there were a way to HEAR a ventrical bust... then.. u would. Kill me... breaking... oh wait for it.... broken.. shattered heart...
accomplished. Hope you are happy, sir. You ( and others ) are REMARKABLY under-valuing what Alex Smith can do... and this is coming from someone that really likes Ponder,
... and anyone saying 'this is a rebuilding year" ???? WTF?!? seriously? _________________

I think what people are implying is that the rebuilding started in 2011 and is still likely in process, in terms of building up the roster. Most figured it would take three years of drafts (starting in 2011) to build a competitive team, but it actually only took two years. |

Its moreso like this to me:
I will agree that Alex Smith is a better QB then Ponder (right now)
I think there is a fair probability that Alex Smith is slightly better then Ponder (next season). But I also think that Ponder has a fair probability (tho slighty lower) of being on par with Alex Smith.
Given that, I'm unwilling to trade high picks for a likely margin talent gain at the QB position.
SF should either a) cut Alex b) keep him as backup c) trade him for a low pick _________________

Yeah, technically it took 2 years to rebuild the roster to be competitive enough to make it to the playoffs, but I still don't think its done.
We still have major holes at WR/OLB/MLB/LG and CB/S. If we can manage to fix atleast 3 of these holes this offseason, I'd say the rebuild is complete. _________________
