Antoine Winfield, 35, has completed his 14th season in the league and has one year left on his contract. He said he plans to be back in 2013.
"Without a doubt," he said. "I've got to get 15 in. That's a good number."
Defensive end Jared Allen said after the game that he will have surgery on his right shoulder to correct a torn labrum, the first surgery of his career.

| Winfield returning would be huge, need to extend him and get that salary down though. |

Hopefully Winfield is willing to take a paycut it doesn't even need to be a big one just a little relief. I think it's very important to keep him around if possible the defense is different when he's out there. Glad to see Jared is getting the surgery right away. I'm assuming he should be ready for pre-season? I'm not real familiar with how a Torn Shoulder Labrum heals. _________________

Percy Harvin, Antoine Winfield, Kevin Williams, Phil Loadholt, Jasper Brinkley, Erin Henderson, Jamarca Sanford, Jerome Simpson and Marcus Sherels are all starters who either have an expiring contract or other reason why their future with the team is in question.
The roster could look very differently once training camp rolls around. _________________

| The notion that Winfield needs to take a pay cut is ridiculous. It would be nice if he did, but he played at a very high level, and he should get paid what he deserves, regardless of his age. I'm not saying you give him a 5 year deal, but to say that he needs to take a pay cut because he's in his mid-30's is ridiculous. You don't cut the pay of those who exceed your expectations. Guys like Jerome Simpson, Erin Henderson, Kevin Williams, and John Carlson are the type of guys that you ask to take a pay cut. |

I would guess most of those players are let go, nor really have a future as starters.
Brinkley, Simpson and Henderson are all poor starters who need to be replaced anyway.
Williams is an old declining starter, we can move on.
Sherels is garbage.
Sanford is a good backup and special teams player.
Winfield is still a good player but he is under contract and wont be going anywhere.
Harvin can yield the team one or two valuable draft picks to further improve the roster. With his replacement on the roster (Wright), its not really a loss. |

Or E.J. Henderson. I see no value in paying Kevin Williams market value. He isnt part of the future, his replacement has largely been groomed (Ballard), and spending $5+ million on him hinders adding younger players or free agents who could have a longer-term impact.
As we have seen with the rebuild, sometimes you have to roll the dice with young players and unlike Winfield, Williams is a declining player. |

Completely agree. Antoine was one of the better corners in the league this season. And people want him to take a cut? Imagine how that conversation would go with him and his representation. _________________

What I would like.
1. QB to compete with Ponder. He deserves now to start coming into next year but not without competition.
2. A number 1 WR through draft or FA.
3. Draft a CB, thinking 1st round.
4. Take care of the DT, OG positions. _________________ All in for the underdog vikings making a push this season. |

NEEDS:
1. LG - need to replace Johnson, who should be cut ($$$).
2. #1 WR - no explanation needed. Bowe/Jennings/Wallace would be ideal.
3. #2 QB - Joe Webb doesn't belong in the NFL. need a backup to Ponder.
4. LB - need a LB who can cover in the nickel. either a WLB, MLB or both.
5. DT - will KWill be back? Either way we need at least one new DT.
6. FS - Raymond is a disappointment and Sanford should stick to ST's.
7. #2 WR - Jenkins/Simpson are both #3/4 guys at best. we need an upgrade. _________________

You're not taking into account one of the reasons he was so good this year: A much more limited role in the defense. He wasn't starting every game, he wasn't defending the opposing team's best receiver, and the coaching staff rested him whenever they could (There was a story about this a month or so back, I think with the Star Tribune, though I don't remember for sure - I'm not just pulling this out of my behind).
So while he was a key player, he was also more of a role player than in years past. With the expectation of a limited role in the defense going forward, I would think a minor pay cut would be understandable. _________________
