We have our first surprising name to be fired on Black Monday. Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith was fired Monday, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, citing a source who has been informed of the situation.

If he was going to be fired, it should have been 3 years ago (after the 7-9 season), not after a 10-6 season. What a head-scratching and ridiculous move. _________________

It's really not that head-scratching; The team made history. I can't remember if they are now the only team, or one of two or three, to start a season 7-1 and not make the playoffs. _________________

They still won double-digit games, despite not having any offense other than Brandon Marshall. Unless they somehow get Andy Reid to come there, I don't know if any HC they hire will be an upgrade. _________________

I agree it's a jerk-reaction move, but I can see the rationale. _________________

@BradBiggs: Emotional Devin Hester says he is considering retiring from NFL.
That would be a knee jerk reaction if it is based off of the coaching move, that said, Hester is about done in the NFL, he isn't at WR at all, and he had some good years as a returner, but he's always been someone overrated as one, he was either all or nothing. Huge thorn in the Vikings side though. _________________

I disagree.
Coaches are paid to get to the playoffs and win.
They are paid handsomely, for zero job security.
NFL is the one big sport (compared to NBA/MLB/NHL) where the coach has the most potential opportunity to impact the game (game planning, adjustments, strategy) _________________

Wouldn't be surprised at all to see Lovie and Rivera end up somewhere together. _________________

I guess my opinion doesn't amount to anything, but I think he was a good coach. He seemed to get more results with less talent than almost any other coach in the league. His teams always seemed to overachieve.
I think this is the same as the Andy Reid firing. Sometimes you fire a good coach just because it's needed to shake things up. |

Didn't Lovie essentially let Rivera go? _________________

It was a contract issue. Not much Lovie could do about it. _________________

Uh. What? Now they might actually get a better coach in there. |

It's their personnel staff, not their coaches IMO. How the offensive line can be ignored for so long is beyond me.
They've also let the defense almost age into obscurity. _________________

Lovie Smith is a good coach. I think he got the wrong end of the stick on this one. Coaching isnt the problem for Chicago, its been personnel decisions. |
