The guy doesn't have great speed, not a power guy, doesn't have a go to move but he is solid in all the above. He works hard and has a great motor. I don't think we break the bank to keep him and we would be able to draft an end with our first this year if he leaves but we have other holes to fill. I hope he stays. |
That's every reason not to resign him |
Because he is solid all around and because we can use our 1st rnd pick on an end opposed to using in on a dt/cb? Personally I'd rather have less needs going into the draft than more. |
Cutting Wright will free more money. Sign Avril and definately a RT,a cB and FS and decent money DT and we'll be in good position draft day. |

Wright is gone, no money needed for Talib or Freeman this year. I'd be happy with Avril who is a better pash rusher I just think Bennett will be a little cheaper and is more well rounded. Not sure we will be able to address that many needs in fa but I'd be jacked if we did. I do think we nab 1/2 "bigger name" fa's this year again. Maybe not $50-$60 million dollar guys again but they will be starters. _________________

I agree. The RT position is deep in FA. Gotta explore that as much as anything outside CB.
Ps Avril is younger than Bennett and a Florida native |

People really seem to be selling Bennett short. He's an elite run defender and he's EASILY our most consistent pass rusher.
Bennett has become one of the best 3rd/4th down pass rushers in the league and he is just now entering his prime. I would hate to let him walk. It would be a huge loss. _________________

Thing is, I dont see him that consistent. It seems like he doesn't bring it every play. Yes, I know you're not going to get a sack every play, but it seems like he's more inconsistent. If he gets sacks, it'll come in bunches, but there are quite a few games where he's just dissapeared.
I like Bennett a lot but I'm not sure if he's going to be worth the money he might command on the open market. |

Just because he's having a contract yr season, doesn't mean we need him. Simply being one of our best.......... Doesn't mean he's irreplaceable |

I don't see that at all. I haven't seen him take plays off.

Here are the 3rd/4th down stats I was referring to. He's in great company.

The contract year point is true and I guess that you have to be skeptical of that, but we have 25 sacks as a team and Bennett has 9 of them. Our pass rush is awful, it has been for years. Now we have a 27 year old DE that is vital to our pass rush and our run defense and we are willing to let him go? Why open up another hole on our roster? He's a guy that we should be building around. _________________

The other catch to not bringing back one of our more "dominant" players on defense is that we are showing a message to everyone else that even if you perform better than most, you may not get that contract. Now i think it's understandable if he requests a huge contract and doesn't take a reasonable contract. At that point it is more on him than us. We should make an offer that suits us as well, make him the person that says no. We need to send a message to the younger players that we take care of our own. Because if not, you end up with situations like Jackson in San Diego. _________________
