Accept the following things as true for the sake of discussion:
-We miss the playoffs
-We have a coaching change (Either Rob moves on, or Jerry brings in an entirely new staff).
-Brent is suspended for the year and/or Cut from Dallas while in jail.
Would you continue with the 3-4 or would you take the opportunity this off-season to switch to the 4-3 (or any other defense)?
[Assuming Rat isn't brought back]
Ware - Hatcher - Spears - Spencer
Carter - Lee - Connor/???? _________________

I guess it would depend on who the new coach is. If its Bill Cowher, for example, I don't see a change to the 4-3. If Jerry has a say in it, I think we stay 3-4. Remember how Jerry never could quite replace Charles Haley? Boy did he try. Pittman, carver, Ellis, Ekuban, etc. I think Jerry figured out its easier to find a good 3-4 OLB than a true 4-3 DE. _________________ Quote from May 7, 2013...

| Keep that 3-4 assuming we bring in another NT this defense was on the verge of being dominant before all the injuries. We have probably the best LB core for the defense and 2 great MLB's. If it ain't broke dont fix it. |

Apart from Lee and Carter, I think everyone in the front 7 would be less effective in a 4-3. I don't think Spears is any good, period, I think the rest of the DE/DTs are too small, I don't really buy Ware at the spot and I definitely don't buy Spencer at the spot. _________________

Stick with the 3-4. The team's invested a lot of resources to implement the system.
I also don't think Ware would last an entire season playing as a 4-3 DE with his neck and shoulder issues.
Then what happens with Wilbur and Butler? Who plays LDE? Hatcher and Crawford, who would probably be better as under-tackles in a 4-3 scheme? And if Ware is used like Von Miller in Denver where he plays OLB on obvious running downs and rushes the passer on obvious passing situations, who is the RDE? _________________

This may be the best argument against the 4-3. I too believe Ware would take more punishment with his hand on the ground. Not to mention, his long arms, speed, and ability to dip and turn on a dime is diminished. |

That's how I feel as well. It'll really depend on who the coach is and what scheme he wishes to implement. As it stands now, we're best suited for the 3-4 due to the talent we have at ILB (which is 100% due to Jerry) and we'd be very thin at DE should we switch to a 4-3. We'd be deep at DT, but we'd need DE's and our LB's would now be out of place. Sure, Carter can move to OLB in the 4-3 and return to his natural position, but, when healthy, he's already shown that he's one of the better (if not one of the best) ILBs in the entire league. We'd need a strong overhaul on the d-line to make that transition. It isn't a difficult one, but it would take a season or two. _________________
