I guess this relates somewhat to the Redskins but didn't want to start a post on it..
Has anyone followed Laron Landry for the Jets .. Is he playing well for them.. Guess he did recover from the achilles injuries/ without surgery ..?? |

How exactly would have Strasburg helped a ninth inning meltdown? |

She's kinda hot. | All the chicks are hot in it but that one redhead that was singing toward the end. Classic, I'll have to send this to my x (she's an eagles fan) and a few friends that are.
Thanks B _________________ RIP SSF mike23md

You're backing the money grab, turtle? Really? That's so sad. Because Maryland will never be competitive in the Big Ten. Ever. Why?
First, the geography of the roster:
Code: |
IN-STATE
MD 42
ADJACENT STATES
PA 9
VA 8
DC 6
DE 2
ACC COUNTRY STATES
NC 7
FL 5
GA 5
SC 3
NORTHERN STATES
NY 3
NJ 3
MA 1
RANDOM OTHERS
TN 2
CA 1
TX 1
INTL 1 |
Outside of the random others, every state that Maryland recruited from was a state on the Eastern Seaboard. This makes sense since all of the teams they play in the ACC are on the Eastern Seaboard. However, they just joined a conference where all of their new conference members are Midwestern teams (excluding Rutgers). How many recruits do they have there? Zippy.
Why does that matter? Because a kid from Georgia or Florida wants to 1) play for a team that will help him get noticed by NFL scouts, 2) play in big time televised games (again to get noticed by scouts), and 3) play in nice weather where the girls wear as little as possible for as long as possible.
Maryland fails on point 1. It might be okay for point 2, provided the kid is willing to accept the fact the reason he's televised is because he's the woodshed opponent for Ohio State or Michigan. However, point 3 is an outright joke. It's one thing for a kid to come out of the South and play for Ohio State or Michigan; it isn't happening for the Terps without the ACC ties to keep him.
So, the Terrapins just significantly harmed their recruiting in the South. They've got a new venue in the North and Midwest, right? Two problems:
1. Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, et al. already own that territory. Good luck trying to convince a kid from Dayton that he should come play for the mighty 4-win Terrapins.
2.
Courtesy of an article on Grantland, most of the talent is in the opposite direction from where the Terrapins are moving towards. Only state that is considered a top tier recruiting ground is Ohio and that's fought over like a bone amongst feral dogs.
Finally, there's one other big problem: by joining up with the Big Ten, they've allowed them to extend their footprint over Maryland. This was the Big Ten's whole reason for inviting Maryland: to extend the reach of the Big Ten Network subscriber and fan base. Watch what happens when Byrd Stadium sells out regularly ... with 30K fans from opposite teams. With that comes recruiters from the rest of the Big Ten enticing guys out of Maryland. Sure, Ohio State and Penn State were going to get their guys anyway, but now you need to worry about Illinois, Purdue, and Minnesota as well. Oh, and Virginia and DC become a lot harder as well. Thanks.
In short, Maryland hurt its ability to recruit in the South; it will have an incredibly hard time recruiting in Big Ten country because of the existing ties there; and it opened its own backyard to more teams thus making it harder to keep those chips it does have.
In short, the only way this makes any sense whatsoever is solely for money. Academics is a push between the Big Ten and the ACC, as is basketball. It's a money grab. To be fair, given that Maryland already had an athletic budget shortfall and was forced to cut seven sports to try and stem the bleeding, it's understandable.
Except they have to pay $50M to have the privilege to leave. That's more or less the sum of their entire budget. If you believe for one second that the ACC will take less than a dime of that penalty, I have a bridge to sell you. The ACC cannot negotiate; if they do, then they face the same problem the Big East did when Syracuse, Pitt, and West Virginia bolted because the Big East didn't do more to keep Virginia Tech, Miami, and Boston College home. They cannot afford to have Florida State think "hmm, maybe we should leave."
Instead, the ACC now has to make sure that either Maryland bankrupts its athletic department by shelling out the penalty ... or by bankrupting its athletic department by going to the mat through the courts. The ACC has no choice but to try to sew massive amounts of salt into Maryland's soil for the simple reason that "ita semper proditores" (thus always to traitors). They have to make the Terps an object lesson in what it means to leave the ACC.
As for the Big Ten, yes, nominally, they are extending their brand into two lucrative media markets. However, Maryland doesn't really move the dial from a television perspective in DC (Rutgers doesn't do much in the Philly/NYC markets either). Also, unlike the ACC getting Notre Dame, Maryland and Rutgers do absolutely nothing to make the upcoming media deal for the Big Ten. More likely than not, it would have gone up significantly without Maryland and Rutgers, but now you have to slice the pie 14 ways. |
