Leftwich's biggest negative is that he's Bernie Kosar as far as mobility is concerned. Which is one of the main reason's he's never started 16 games and was ousted out of Jacksonville.
This game tonight will show everybody whether or not the Steelers can remain contenders. Also it will let the Steelers know if they can rest Ben longer maybe till after the second Ravens game.
Everything I've mentioned is based of Leftwich completing at least 60% w/ out any turnovers and the Steelers out gaining the Ravens on the ground.
I can't say anything about the Ravens defense outside of the the few things I saw in the games I've mentioned. I believe a lot of changes may have to do with the personnel on the field. E. Reeds shoulder, Ray Lewis injury, Terrel Suggs injury, Haloti Ngata injury all have played a huge role in what kind of defense the Ravens can and can not play. The Steelers will challenge the Ravens vertically because they have a player that has the speed to beat coverage. But they will still attack the Ravens horizontally because they don't have anybody that can guard H. Miller. |
And that's a lot to be basing things on. Lefty hasn't started an NFL game in what? 2-3 years or so? He probably hasn't taken many first team snaps. He's new to a system and should still be trying to settle into that system within game conditions.
You're basically just looking at Leftwich's career numbers and coming to the conclusion that, that's the kind of numbers he's going to put up. That's ridiculous. His "decent" years were in Jacksonville in a completely different offensive scheme. Matt Cassel was another guy who didn't throw interceptions... until he played the Ravens... and now he throws them all the time.
Furthermore, the 2nd part, I think is serving to underestimate our team as well. Your rushing attack, hasn't been as efficient a product as we've displayed. Our run defense has also been more stout on a per carry basis. So not only is Leftwich going to look better than Carson Palmer, but now we're going to get destroyed by your running game as well? I mean why should we even show up. Sounds like we're going to get thumped by 30 points. Good thing Bens' not playing or it would've been 50.
In terms of the defense, even in those games the things I've outlined were true. The cushion was back further, we ran more stunts, and we've tended to keep Reed up into the intermediate fields. This has been the case for this season. The only thing that's changed for the Ravens has been the positive move by Peas/Harbaugh to take Kemo out of the starting lineup. |
Nobody is underestimating anybody and why are you getting defensive I've kept my comments pretty biased I believe. The Ravens and the Steelers are the same this season. The difference is when the Ravens struggled they still found ways to win. But when the Steelers struggled they've found ways to lose. Which is the difference between these two teams. The Ravens have a lot more to lose today then the Steelers as nobody is given them much of a chance with a seldom used, slow footed, long throwing release, injury prone QB.
Leftwich has never been a accurate thrower of the ball and his career percentage of maybe mid 50's proves it. But shorter more control passes with some shots deep to keep the defense honest can help him and the offense. All Leftwich has to do is once or twice hit M. Wallace with passes over 30+ yds. Big arm QB teamed up with one of the leagues best deep threats. The Ravens have the same combination with Torrey and Joe. The difference between the Ravens and the Steelers is that the Steelers CB's are healthy which could aide them a tad bit more defensively.
I'm stating things the Steelers have to do to win. I never once mentioned they'd win. The trend can be broken today and the Ravens for once in a game without Big Ben can blow the Steelers out. But the same thing could happen and the Steelers could squeak out a win in a game they normally lose. |
You didn't clarify. By that above statement, it appeared as if that was simply your assumption of what would happen and not necessarily stating what would need to happen to get things done.
There's a difference. I don't find it impossible that there exists a possibility that those things could all happen, but from the Carson Palmer statement along with some other things, it just appeared as if you were somehow deluding yourself into believing that Leftwich IS going to go beast mode and look like a top 10 QB... while your running game is also going to outpace ours. I could certainly believe that your rushing game outpaces ours... as its close enough and you're bringing back Mendenhall. But you didn't clarify that you were mentioning things that needed to happen vs. your actual prediction. Anyways...
My prediction: We see the Steelers establish a ground game and Pees allows them to nickel and dime the ball down the field by giving up those 7 yard comebacks and hitch routes. He's going to bend down the field. Then he's going to increase aggressiveness in the redzone and the Steelers will settle for a ton of field goals. Probably also score a touchdown on a drive via Heath Miller. I could see a score like 19 for the Steelers.
On the other side, I think we're generally unable to get the running game going, but we'll have a few big time runs that put us in scoring territory. Flacco lobs one up to Pitta and Torrey sees a jump ball TD go his way. We settle for a field goal on another drive that gets us 17... and as the Steelers take the lead to 19 off a field goal. The offense decides it wants to play and they respond with a Jacoby Jones TD. 24-19. An Ed Reed interception returned for a TD in the closing minutes as Leftwich tries to rally the Steelers for the score seals the deal. We win 31-19. Score doesn't reflect how close the game was.
Harbaugh then gives a speech about how this team is a family and how we work really hard and stuff. The end. _________________

Probably a bible | I'd say the game ball and that he'd find a way to work in whoever's getting it and give it to them to finish strong. _________________

I'm surprised they didn't activate Harewood with Williams out. It sucks that Cody isn't playing either. |

Pumped up for this game
I'm expecting Flacco and Sizzle to go off. Sizzle 2+ sacks, Flacco 200+ yards 3 TD's. Big game, business as usual. _________________ FLACCO NATION -- XLVII ChampS

No shovel? No sword? Darn.
Anyway, why is Terrance Cody inactive? Injury? _________________

Yup. Must be holding him out one more week to make sure. Can't say I blame them, DeAngelo Tyson looked really good last week. _________________

He played mostly for Ngata though, I wouldn't expect him to take too many snaps away from Jones (not that he doesn't deserve to play over Jones). I'm more worried about Kemoeatu being the only NT. Maybe Tyson could take some snaps there, I know he did at Georgia sometimes when they went to the 3-4. |

| Flacco shouldn't throw any interceptions tonight with the uniforms Pittsburgh is wearing. Damn those things are ugly. |
