Dr. James Andrew was astonished to find that Adrian Peterson's knee had as much wear and tear as a "newborn baby" when he operated on the freakish tailback late last December.
"I can't believe it," Andrews told Peterson's parents. "For this guy to have played as much football as he's played his whole life, and not to have hardly any wear and tear, it's incredible. I've never seen a football player, especially one who runs and cuts as much as he does, with a knee in that condition." Peterson gives the doctor credit, but insists he's just different -- "my family and genetics. Just how my body is built." Rotoworld's Pat Daugherty suggests Peterson's knees are made of rare metals found on a comet that crashed to Earth in a Norwegian forest.

Yards per carry numbers have improved by quite since the 90's, which was statistically the hardest era to run in. The running/hitting/speed hasn't changed much since then.
Still got to go with Barry Sanders. He's not quite as good at finishing runs, but what he did at and around the line of scrimmage can't be taken for granted, best runner I've ever seen. _________________

Defenses today are that much faster and hit that much harder - careers are little several seasons shorter now than they were then. Do not give me any nonsense like "oh they werent spread out" - explain why running backs shelf low is much lower now? They run out juice faster these days than they used to, what does that tell you?

Completely wrong - and RB shelf life isn't lower now.
1990-1999
5 RBs totaled more than 2000 carries.
10 totaled more than 1500
29 totaled more than 1000
2000-2009
8 2000+
16 1500+
34 1000+
Of those RB with 1000+ carries
1990-1999
3 averaged 4.5+ YPC
13 averaged 4.0+ YPC
16 couldn't break 4.0 YPC
Average for all of 29 - 4.05
2000-2009
6 4.5+
26 4.0+
8 <4.0
Average for all of 34 - 4.21
So, more RBs, getting more carries and averaging more YPC. |

Peterson has averaged 2.8 yards per rush AFTER first contact. It’s his highest rate over the last four seasons, and the second-best rate in the NFL this season (C.J. Spiller, 3.0).
Peterson has needed the power boost because he has faced eight or more defenders in the box on a league-high 57 rushes this season – and even that hasn’t slowed him down. Peterson is averaging a league-best 6.3 yards per rush against such defensive fronts.
You can’t discount his speed, either. Peterson has gained 20-plus yards on 13 runs this season, almost twice as many as the next highest rushers (LeSean McCoy and Spiller, 7). The most 20-yard runs Peterson has had in a season was 20 in 2008.

That's greatly inflated by the early 2000s, which was basically the steroid era for running backs. Look at things from around 2007 or so to 2012 and it's a vastly different outlook. _________________

Is it vastly different because you halved the time of research? _________________

Nope unless you mean that vastly different means even easier. The past 5 full seasons (2007-2011)
11 players with 1000+ carries
21 players with 750+ carries
48 with 500+ carries
13 with 4.5+ YPC
35 with 4.0+ YPC
13 with <4.0 YPC
Average for all 48 RBs over those 5 years.
4.29 YPC
This year *all* NFL RBs are averaging 4.21 YPC.
Again, it was much more difficult to run in the 1990s - moreso than any other era. |

I have a feeling a few years down the line someone will accuse AD of taking steroids this season. _________________

Exactly. The whole 90's vs 00's arguement is somewhat pointless when you're talking about a talent like AD. Put him in any era of football and he'd dominate. Such a special player. |

Never said he wouldn't - but he isn't as good as Sanders. |

Sanders is probably the best RB of all time. Not really saying much with that statement. |
