The "left tackle is the most important player in terms of keeping the QB healthy" line of thought is a bit of a myth. Statistically speaking, QBs aren't injured more on hits off the left side of the offense than they are on hits off the right side of the offense.
Interestingly, QBs are hurt much more often on pressure from Blitzing LBs who come up the middle (as those guys are moving much faster and thus hit harder as kinetic energy goes as the square of velocity) yet we don't choose to pay big money to RBs who are good in Blitz pickup (I mean, Brandon Jackson only signed for 2 years $4.5m)
The reason the left tackle is more important to the offense than the right tackle is not injuries, but turnovers. Hits from the blind side are much more likely to result in fumbles. Fumbles are bad. |

Absolute zero in 2 years from a first rounder. Before anyone says "Aaron Rodgers," maybe think of the fact that we had Brett Favre instead of Marshall Newhouse as the alternative. I don't want to be that guy, I really don't. But Sherrod has given us nothing and Newhouse is very upgradeable. If there is a solid T prospect, take him. |
Good lord, he broke his leg for crying out loud. Back in 1996 we didn't give up on Mike Flanagan after he broke his leg and he ended up being a pretty good center. I think you are being a tad premature to give up on this kid. | If we don't have a good LT, in time we will be looking for a new QB. I'd rather have 2 LT's than 0. Right now it looks like we have 0. |
I understand you are worried about depth but has Newhouse played poorly this year? Right now he's the only really only true tackle on the active roster (Datko is on PS, right?) so we all have to hope we don't have any more injuries on our O line. _________________

| I'm still not expecting him to play. At times I wonder whether our training staff are overly cautious with our guys. They can't be as bad as they've shown this year, can they???? _________________

Apparently Bulaga did not dislocate his hip as some places reported. | Quote: | | his injury was a “small fracture” of the hip socket, and not a dislocation. |
Either way he said he should recover fully | Quote: | | He said he met with a specialist on Tuesday and is on track for a “full recovery,” |

Well, that's one less side of the ball to worry about. Now let's get Sherrod (or some LT) healthy and I feel a whole lot better going forward. _________________

Hopefully both Sherrod and Bulaga are good to go for next year...tackle could go from one of our weakest positions to one of the strongest
Newhouse, Sherrod, Bulaga, Barclay, Datko + possible draft picks/UDFA

http://gnb.scout.com/2/1246919.html | I read that on JSOnline, even his mom called him after all the speculation that it was career ending. Glad to know he will be back next year, just need to figure out the rest of this year. _________________

What happened with Neal? I haven't heard anything aside from McCarthy's one comment and the fact that he DNP this week.
God this is crazy. Wilson? Is he practicing again? _________________

The latest is when he was asked when Matthews/Wilson/Lang/Nelson would be back and he said "I'm timelined out, frankly,” McCarthy said. “They're getting better. I don't know if they"ll be ready this week."
Snagged the report from ESPN today..
Did not participate –G/T T.J. Lang (ankle), OLB Clay Matthews (hamstring), DE Mike Neal (shoulder), WR Jordy Nelson (hamstring), RB James Starks (knee), DE C.J. Wilson (knee).
So, no. He isn't practicing. _________________

I only heard/read the stuff from McCarthy saying it was his shoulder and he did not feel good about the report he got from the medical staff. I know Neal had a shoulder issue his rookie year that landed him on IR, so hopefully it has nothing's to do with that. |

By all accounts, I would be at some level shocked if that's not the case. As I said from day-1, Bulaga will be fine. They are just playing that thing safe. Many would have played him this year with that injury.
Sherrod is still getting water in the knee. A very common issue with a lower break like that. Sherrod can't bend all that well anyway. Pending style, many would be on the field at this stage of that injury. It's just going to take Sherrod a hair longer because it falls in line with a skill set flaw that he already had.
Your talking about two injuries with very high heal rates though. _________________

These reports on Bulaga and Sherrod sure are encouraging for 2013 and if any team needs good news its us. If we can secure a decent center either via FA or the draft indeed our line could go from a weakness to a strength. _________________

I saw a lot of great football minds say preseason that we had a top 5 starting O-line. Seems hard to imagine, but Sitton and Bulaga have shown in years they are healthy that they can be top 5 at their position. If we add Jones/Cooper via draft and get Sherrod back, I will feel much more comfortable with that line especially in pass pro. |
