I know it's too early to talk about this, but I enjoy some off-season chatter. I'm not sure if we'll be able to keep our staff together this year, mainly our offensive coordinator, Greg Roman. Last year there were reports of him being ready to bolt for Penn State, and there are a good amount of college schools that would want him. California could be one if Tedford is let go.
Who would you guys want to replace him? Do we promote within, or look at other teams? _________________

To replace Roman, I think Geep Chryst is the guy. He's already involved in play design and play call (I think QB 9 was his baby, or was it Vernon Post).
If we lose Fangio, I think Jim Leavitt would be the next guy in line. But somehow, I think it's more likely we lose Leavitt to a college team. He's a great coach, and he's way overqualified for the LB coach job.
I think, though, that the second most likely coach to leave us is probably Brad Seely. And I have no idea who would replace him. Probably someone not on the staff right now. _________________

Chryst would be interesting. I'm in the same boat as you with Leavitt, he could possibly go this year too. I think he was up for the ASU position, but wasn't picked. Tomsula could be another guy that could be up for our DC job. _________________

Tomsula should get a life time contract. That guy is awesome. I've never seen the 49ers play harder then when he got to be a HC for one game. Keep the man happy cuz he's the kind of coach that we need. _________________

Tomsula never struck me as an X and O type of guy, more of a technician and motivator. Does he have the Xs and Os? If he doesn't, he'd be a life-long position coach (even though he was a head coach in the NFL Europe.. but in the NFL E, motivation and technique was often way more important than strategy, in the NFL, all three are very important). If Seely leaves, I'd make Tomsula assistant head coach, along with his DL duties, and bump up his salary a little, in hope to keep him for a long time.
If Roman leaves and we promote Chryst, we wouldn't even be in a rush to replace him, seeing how both Chryst and Harbaugh act as a QB coach already. I'd bring in an assistant and ease him in. _________________

Luckily Seely is our Assistant Head Coach, so he can only be interviewed for head coaching jobs. Not saying that means he won't interview anywhere, but it makes me feel better about him staying here. _________________

I don't think Harbaugh would cockblock Seely. If he wants a different opportunity, Harbaugh will let him take a look at his options. _________________

Well isn't it a rule that he can't interview for anything but HC jobs? I'm sure Jimmy would let him do whatever though _________________

That was exactly my point. We don't have to, but we probably would. _________________

Daniel Jeremiah wrote an article last week about potential HC candidates for next year. #5 on his list was...
| Quote: | Brad Seely
Age: 56
Current job: Special teams coordinator, San Francisco 49ers
Seely has an excellent résumé and should garner consideration for any head-coaching vacancies following the season. He has coached in the NFL for 22 seasons, 10 of which were spent as the special teams coach under Bill Belichick in New England. He has transformed the 49ers' special teams unit into the NFL's very best. The fact that Baltimore's John Harbaugh has successfully made the transition from special teams coach to head coach should help Seely's candidacy.
Former player: "Brad was very well respected in our locker room. He is very detailed and he knows how to communicate." |

Upon Further Review: Toughest remaining opponent this season, Coordinator most likely to land a HC job, most surprising player in the league this year, and our picks for week 10
| Quote: | As of today, his name is being discussed by media and fan base at North Carolina, Boston College, and Kentucky among other schools.
There are plenty of teams in both the NFL and NCAA experiencing struggles on the offensive side of the ball, so an excelling offensive coordinator such as Roman will always gather attention as those teams look for new leadership. |
I really hope Roman doesn't leave this year. _________________
