what level of faith should the Pats have that Mallett would be ready to take over for Brady upon injury or retirement?

Right now, based on what I've seen out of him in preseason, I'm at about a 3-3.5
Don't like his accuracy one bit. Don't like the fact that he wants to rifle every throw instead of putting touch on it where appropriate. Don't like his pocket presence.

He's got a long way to go before he's ready to start, and personally, if I'm the Pats I'm hedging my bets by adding a guy like AJ McCarron in the middle rounds.

I would agree with you, but Matt Cassel isn't on any level the talent Mallett is, and BB managed to make him look like a starter. If anybody, he's the QB I've had the most confidence about as a backup to Brady since Flutie.

I suspect that Brady will still be here when Mallett is ready to step up or be traded.

I'm not particularly confident in him but I think he could probably keep the team competitive for a short period (2-3 games)

I agree w/ that but I dont know if he'll ever develep to that point. I liked his skillset coming out to develop but didnt like him as a person. As pro he dasn't done anything bad yet but still not fully confident in his development.

What is our faith based on though? Is it pre-season? in practice?

No meaningful reps have been had in regular season, competitive play.

Developed backups like Aaron Rodgers, Matt Flynn etc. were all considered poor before playing meaningful games where they eventually shone.

I think if Brady misses a few games, and we have to see what Mallett is capable of then we can make a fair assessment, but currently, our faith, be it good or bad is misguided and misplaced.
