|
|
|
Scenario:
~Green Bay finishes the season 13-3
~We roll through the playoffs and win Super Bowl XLVII: Hey, it's early, it's fun to live in the fantasy
~We are awarded a 4th round compensatory pick for Matt Flynn
Released/Not resigned/Retired:
~Charles Woodson
~Greg Jennings
~Cedric Benson
~Donald Driver
~Jermichael Finley
Resigned:
~Sam Shields
~Erik Walden
~Tom Crabtree
The Draft:
With the 32nd pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
Tyler Eifert TE Notre Dame
6’6” 251 lbs. 4.70/40
An athletic TE who Notre Dame is already using in the slot - similar to how we like to use the TE in MM’s offense. TE is one of the few positions in the draft that is deep - seriously, the draft as a whole is very weak. Coincidentally, it is also one of our biggest needs.
It would not surprise me at all if Eifert were the BPA when we pick at #32.
In addition to having the skill set we look for in a TE in our offense, he is a “Packer Person” our organization covets.
Could very well be our Jimmy Graham.
With the 64th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
Mario Benavides C Louisville
6’4” 300 lbs. 5.15/40
Some of you will say that I am just recycling picks. I point out that with so few solid picks at C, what else can I do? Benavides is hardly the best Center to come around in awhile, but he is more than adequate. At a position of extreme need, we can’t afford to pass on.
Benavides has the athleticism to play in the ZBS, but also the strength so many ZBS prospects lack. He is having a whale of a season, solid in the running game, even better in pass protection. I once again will stand by my prediction he will rise up to the end of Round 2.
Should solidify our OL long term.
With the 96th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
Mister Cobble NT Kentucky
6’0” 332 lbs. 5.35/40
Ya, I know. Another recycle. But he’s so damn good, and a steal at the end of Round 3.
A stud NT is hard to find, and when you have when, you would be best suited to bring in a quality backup to give that stud NT some rest. BJ Raji is everything we look for in a NT, but we have no real backup, a need that Cobble fits.
He is strong at the point of attack and deceptively athletic. Should be a good cog against the run, and should give Pickett and Raji breathers to keep them fresh and extend their careers.
With the 132nd pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
Travis Howard, CB, Ohio State
6’1” 196 lbs. 4.50/40
Classic TT CB prospect. Howard is tall, fast and has long arms.
I think CB is more of a need than people wanna admit. Yes, we are improving as a defense, however, we still are giving up too many passing yards.
With the 134th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
Jordan Matthews WR Vanderbilt
6’3” 200 lbs. 4.50/40
Big, strong WR who is good after the catch. Racks up a lot of YAC and could be a good replacement for DD and Jennings.
With the 210th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select...
Bruce Taylor ILB Virginia Tech
6’2” 244 lbs. 4.73/40
Bigger bodied ILB to be that FB of the defense to backup AJ Hawk. _________________

Haven't seen Benavides play at all but the rest I like. Matthews is a player for sure. _________________

Like it. Would like a WR higher, in the NT spot, but no complaints _________________

Benavides is "just a guy" for me. Matthews has some parts I like, just not sure he can get away from them at the next level. |

Kids a good football player. Just not the type of center I would draft at the slot he might go. You can make "that guy" out of a UDFA moving position just about every year. Why not use that pick on a premium and beg Saturday for one more year. Also, no way he would beat out EDS in a fair fight, NO WAY! |

Meh, this is a weak draft, and we still have three starting caliber WRs in Nelson, Cobb, and JJ. Plus I just gave us Eifert. If we had to wait a year to add more WR help, it's not the end of the world. Especially when you factor in next year's draft should be deeper (I dunno if it can possibly be weaker).

You really don't think Benavides has more upside? I agree in the here and now EDS wins, but I like what Benavides could turn into 1-2 years down the road.
We have a QB who has a chance to turn into a flashier Joe Montana, I think it'd be very wise of us to keep on investing in talented, mean, tough big ugglies to keep this guy upright and playing for as long as possible.
I remember games Montana played where his uniform would be pristine at the end of the game, imagine if we protected Rodgers that well?
BTW, I didn't cut Saturday, I had him coming back for one more year. Also, I don't forsee Benavides beating out EDS, I have him beating out Don Barclay or Greg Van Roten. _________________

I really like Eifert and I'd really like to get him and keep Finley.
I dont understand the comments of this being a weak draft. If most who are expected to come out, do come out this could be a real deep edge rush draft, interior DL has some big time upside and the safety class is pretty dang strong as well. Might be a little defensive top heavy but not weak IMO. _________________

All positions we've recently added and not likely to address, at least not early.
Looking at mock drafts throughout the web, players that have late 1st/early 2nd grades are going in the mid 1st round consistently. Experience has told me that's a sure fire sign of a weak draft.
Not saying, we cannot get a good player, just it's a little light on talent IMHO. _________________

Pretty much all players I have commented on before except for Matthews. Like him a lot if he works on his route running. He will need to test well, but has the measurables and does a good job showing up on game day despite the fact defenses know that is where Baby Rodgers is trying to go with the ball.
Not so sure why you feel we need to draft Benavides that high. I like him as a prospect for the Packers but I think you are really over drafting him. I still would not touch him until at least the 4th. I also do not see him beating out Barclay or Roten at a G position next year. That is a guy that will make it at C and C only next year IMO. |
