Gocong and Sheldon were also traded for draft picks
Browns claimed DA off waivers from Baltimore
Reuben Droughns was traded for some players
Shaun Rogers traded for Leigh Bodden and 3rd round pick
They were not FAs. We had to give up players/draft picks for them
That takes out a very large chunk of those players listed that were any good.
LeCharles Bentley never played a down for us
Gary Baxter the CB from Baltimore blew out both knees
Jeff Garcia was an abortion
Rickey Dudley, Earl Holmes, Trent Dilfer, Brian Russell, Terrelle Smith, Donte Stallworth....really? Those are good FA signings?
The only ones from this list that somewhat decent signings were Jamir Miller(even though only lasted 3 years with us), Steinbach, & Jamal Lewis (three season as well) _________________

This. I'm glad they didn't massively overpay for an above average receiver like Garcon.
I want the Browns to sign free agents, but when they're closer to being legitimate contenders. Let the young guys play and see what the Browns have in them. Once they're closer to competing, then they can sign a couple of good free agents. Hopefully they sign someone such as Byrd or another top free safety and a good guard this offseason. _________________ Cleveland Browns Forum Hall of Fame Inductee

I will give a name from a few years ago that still bums me out that we didn't get. Nate Clements...The guy went to cheap a-- Cincy and has been a solid starter for a few years now. I'm not sure about his contract, but he didn't break the bank. This is the type of veteran that plays a premier position, that could have helped this team. _________________

First he went to the Niners on a very expensive contract. After the Niners let him go he signed a much cheaper contract with the Bengals. _________________ browns and indian fan 7272

Unrelated, but how is philly the third youngest team and 16 mil under the cap? It's impressive, I know that.

Exactly.....I don't know if I would have wanted him if it was going to cost what the niners paid. I'm talking about getting a veteran that still might have production left that won't cost a ton. He is a solid starter at a reasonable price. _________________

And at the time, we were in a bidding War with SF....and at the time Nate Clements got the largest contract for a Defensive player in NFL history..... _________________ -A team is built through the Draft.

They draft well.....
One of the biggest steal in the draft is them getting Bradnon Boykin the CB out of UGA when they did......the eagles get players like that every year it seems... _________________ -A team is built through the Draft.

Like who?
Would you rather have Benjamin getting reps at WR, or Laurent Robinson? Or current free agent and absolutely bad WR Lee Evans?
If you are going to be bad, its better to be bad with young developmental players who could be good rather than overpaid, under-talented free agents who wont be here in 3 years? |
You don't find it sad that every year we are talking about "giving reps" instead of actually trying to be competitive.
I think a lot of the FA's this past year were garbage and I am glad we didn't over spend for them, but for crying out loud, we are the worst team in pro football, not adding a single notable FA has to be looked at as a mistake. We are seriously fielding a AAA team right now. Are there guys on AAA teams that eventually become great? Sure, but an NFL schedule is anything but a AAA schedule. We aren't very good at all. I just don't like this attitude that it's just fine and dandy for us to use every season as a practice run. _________________ Adopt-a-Brown: Jabaal Sheard - Stats:

It's fullback so it's like a revolving door by nature back there man. He led the way for a Reuben Droughns 1,000 yard season, that's enough for me. |

Contracts that expire this year and 2012 cap hit according to Spotrac rounded off.
1. S. Brown 5.44 million
2. S. Fujita 4.75 million
3. J. Cribbs 2.68 million
4. B. Jackson r.b. 2.25 million
5. B. Watson 5 million
6. J. Parker d.e. 3 million
7. P. Dawson 3.8 million
That totals about 26.8 coming off the cap for 2013. Out of this group the only one I'd really be mad about not resigning is P. Dawson. He is already the highest paid kicker and a three year 12-13 million contract should get it done. I can't see many teams offering him more and he is more valuable to the Browns. Resigning him for 4 million a year does not hurt our cap much.
The site also lists dead cap money that totals 6.2 million from players like Steinbach,Wallace,Pashos,Evan Moore and Robiskie. I don't know if that gives us another 6.2 million to spend or not.
Contracts and what year the player becomes a free agent. Just our major players.
1. J. Thomas 2019
2. J. Haden 2015
3. A. Mack 2014
4. A. Rubin 2015
5. T.J. Ward 2014
6. J. Sheard 2015
7. D. Jackson 2016
So the only two players we should extend next year are Mack and possibly Ward. _________________ browns and indian fan 7272

And to add to above column we have 18.9 already in cap space this year. So to spend where the collective bargaining agreement says we need to get to we are going to have to extend and sign a few free agents I.M.O. _________________ browns and indian fan 7272
