For me, the rationale for having Williams starting over Jimmy Smith is two-fold: prioritizing veterans over young players on defense, and making Jimmy Smith earn his playing time.
We know that Jimmy Smith came into the NFL with documented maturity/character issues. So, keeping Williams as the starter upholds the veteran>youngster, and ensures that Jimmy Smith does the work needed to be a long-term impact player. _________________

sounds like a Carlos Rogers situation to me. He's not as bad as media and fans portray. He faced Brady and Lloyd, so he's taking teams #1 wrs and he struggled vs them as most DBs do and will continue to do.
He doesn't have solid hands for a DB but he's a good tackler and every mistake he makes is magnified because of him turning down the deal that most of ravens nation and media thought he should take because they do want him there. Then they talk crap about him when he makes a mistake because they love their #1 pick from last year and love back ups and think when a starter makes a mistake he should be benched immediatedly.
Damn, sounds like Carlos Rogers and how he was treated here in 08 and 09... _________________

I would point out a few things:
1. One of the pre-Cleveland articles is from baltimoreravens.com. You know, the official site of the Ravens? So, it's not all fans.
2. In quickly scanning over the Baltimore forum's GDT, they mentioned Cary getting picked on against the Bengals and early against the Browns.
3. In his career, Cary Williams has had 22 passes defensed, with 16 coming last year. Carlos Rogers by season: 4, 17, 7, 24, 12, 12, 19, and 1. While Rogers had a hard time getting a turnover, he also prevented the pass from being completed. Williams? Not so much.
Anyway, something to consider. |

Anyway, something to consider. | I hear ya, good points. My thing is that I think he's an upgrade over what we have. I don't think Williams is a dominant cb but the list you put forth before I only see revis as being one. We can't just sit on our hands and go with the status quo. I'm looking for a situation where I think the player wont break the bank, it just entering his prime, will be availabale because the team has depth at cb and the player is an upgrade over our cbs. I think Williams fits that description. _________________

A question: are we looking for a #1 corner or a #2? Would we be okay if we had Wilson plus one of the guys above in group 3? Perhaps keep Hall for one more year plus one of those guys in 3 or 4? What about Hall, Wilson, and a group 1 guy? |

Well, that's great news.
I would like to see the team favouring Doughty over Gomes in the meantime. Last week, there seemed to be better organization in the secondary and I have to believe that Doughty's off-field studying is an impact.
Hopefully last week was not an aberration for Madieu Williams and he's actually playing better, but if anyone knows how to exploit Madieu... _________________

I didn't think that comment was that out of line! |

As much as I may not like Merriweather, bringing back Atogwe is not the answer. At any rate, he is an Eagle.
I would like to see the team try to work Cedric Griffin in at safety in certain packages, if anything. I seem to remember hearing that he was taking some snaps at safety here and there, and I believe that is the surest way for him to prolong his playing career considering past injuries to his knees. _________________

Atogwe was cut before the season, but I don't want him anyways. _________________

I really, really am not in favor of keeping Hall or Cedric Griffin past this season. I feel that $ can be spent more wisely on other DBs and at RT.
I still like Carry Williams out of that group. No major injuries, not going to break the bank. He isn't a #1 cb, but he's going to be a good addition to a secondary needing an upgrade in talent. I like Mike Jenkins also, he has talent. He's showed flashes of being something and is only 27 just like Carry Williams.
If we could cut Hall and CGriff and sign Carry Williams and Mike Jenkins I think we'd be improved. Then we can draft another cb to develop in round 4 or 5 also. That player can compete with Crawford. _________________
