Yes, this is early. I know. I figured it'd be nice to have a place to talk about the future of the team throughout the season though.

There are guys that have potential: Baldridge, Bosworth, Jennings, Morgan, Rutland
Guys who are aging that very well might not be back: Meester, D. Smith, Mathis, G. Jones
Guys who must be back without question: D. Cox, Britton, Knighton, Middleton

There's a lot of guys on that list I can potentially see on other teams next year.
Doubt Shean gets a new deal, unless he really comes back strong, and even then it'd be a one year, small deal.
Britton won't be getting resigned unless he comes back strong from his injuries and the team feels like he won't continue to be a bicycle warrior.
Greg Jones is still one of the best FBs in the league, but he's getting older and FBs aren't as important as they used to be. If he's brought back, it will be a small deal.
Derek Cox will get resigned because even with his injury history, we really need CBs.
Jennings and Knighton will be resigned. Though I'm not so sure what's going on with Knighton right now, with him not starting and all that business, I still think he's the best DT on the roster.
Meester is probably going to retire.
That's all I got for now. The rest are bad to solid depth players.
I hope D. Smith gets resigned but you never know.

Knighton got the start last week, and he's playing snaps like he's a starter in that (mainly) three man rotation. I really hope we retain him. He's younger than Mosley and it makes more sense to keep him around long term.

The bolded are guys i would like to see back. I wouldn't mind Mathis back if he looks like he's still got some game left in him, and Greg Jones is welcome back if he's willing to take a major haircut on his paycheque. Outside of that, i couldn't care less on most of them.
It's scary if you get into the sort of situation where guys like Britton/Jennings/Knighton/Cox are leaving via free agency...you're in a situation where you're losing talent faster than you can hope to replace it. Not good at all. Hopefully that can be avoided.
Personally, i think Gene is going to have to do a better job fishing in the FA pool if this team is going to take big steps. Easier said that done obviously, as we're not exactly a 'destination team'. But there are too many holes, not enough high draft picks right now. And the draft is obviously the key focus in building this team...but it can't be the only avenue fully explored. We need more of the Poz type signings, and less of the misses and longshots. |

It would obviously be nice to have Cox, Smith, Britton, Jennings, Jones and Knighton back but I'm sure the Jaguars will have to be realistic with the money that they have and the aging players. Smith and Jones could get signed somewhere else and I honestly don't see Knighton, Cox or Britton getting signed anywhere else.
For Cox, Knighton and Britton it's kind of like that feeling where they haven't fully contributed all that they can and seeing another team outpay the Jaguars for a new contract is kind of hard to imagine (Knighton might possibly be an exception to this scenario).
