After a successful week 1, Nnivolcm has requested that I continue to make the Game Day Thread until the Lions lose. So, here is another GDT!
After a slow start to the season in week one for the Lions Matt Stafford and crew look to make a big statement in week two.
Lions vs. 49ers
vs.
vs.
Keys to the game:
Detroit:
1. Shut down the league's leading rushing attack
2. Don't give up big plays on the outside
3. Contain Vernon Davis
4. The Defensive line MUST get pressure on Smith
5. Sustain drives on offense allowing the defense to rest.
Injury report:
Fantasy Impact Detroit:
1. Mikel LeShoure is out this week with his suspension.
2. Stafford goes up against a tough defense
3. Calvin is a monster.
Fantasy Impact San Francisco:
1. Frank Gore is averaging 7 YPC and the 49ers lead the league in rushing
2. The Lions secondary is questionable - a potential for Vernon Davis to try to redeem himself if he gets in the end zone this week. _________________

I watched this week's game and after seeing what this Niners' D did to the Pack offense, I just don't see us pulling this one out. Harbaugh has those guys running like a well oiled machine.
Schwartz will see the same thing and is a very inventive guy so I see alot of very "strange" plays to try to fool that defense this week.
I hope we at least keep it interesting and are there at the end. I love Stafford's demeanor under pressure and really feel we always have a chance if the clock is winding down and we are close. _________________

We need Delmas, Houston, and Bently back for this one. Has anyone heard any news on any of those three? _________________

Last I heard, Bentley was fine and Houston will practice this week. Nothing on Delmas. _________________

Going with SF.
Even if we have Houston and Delmas back it'll be a tough game for us to win. I'd like to see our Offense play better and more consistent and the Defense to display the run stopping ability they showed week 1.
Like S-Jax, Gore is another back we've had a lot of trouble stopping so being able to contain him and the SF rushing attack would go a long way towards keeping us in the game. _________________

Wouldn't it be fitting for us to keep StL close, but soundly beat the 49ers?
I have a feeling we win this. The team rebounds, they take care of the ball, we stop the run and Smith throws two INTs. _________________

Well Bentley has a concussion and still has to past some tests. Houston thinks he will be able to practice Wednesday and they aren't saying much about Delmas.

I was thinking the same thing. We should probably lose this game but I think we show up and take a close one. _________________ 11 AAL: Ryan Donahue

The Rams scared me because they were an unknown. The 49ers don't. If we stop the run for the 2nd week, I think we'll have this. _________________

We ain't going to lose this. The nfl doesn't work where a team plays worse than expected so the next week that means they will lose. We got this.

Surely we can win, but I dont see us doing so given what I just saw.

Playing San Francisco on the road isn't a promising matchup for the Lions.

I've been calling the 49ers overrated all offseason, but they really made a statement yesterday. If this were a home game I'd feel better about our chances, but they just soundly beat the Packers. They ran for almost 200 yards at almost 6 a carry, and perhaps most surprisingly, Alex Smith looked really, really good. The Packers' defense isn't exactly elite, but they are very good at forcing turnovers, and the 49ers didn't commit any of those either. Do I even need to elaborate on their defense? Aaron Rodgers looked human, and was forced to dump the ball off left and right all day. His receivers averaged just 10.1 yards per reception. The Packers barely even attempted to run the ball; Rodgers was the team's leading rusher with 27 yards. I guess you shouldn't overreact too much based on one performance, but they did go 13-3 last year and I'm not too sure the 49ers aren't the best team in the NFL right now.
I think if Stafford doesn't get his interception problems corrected during the week, the Lions clearly aren't going to have any kind of a shot to win this one. They also certainly cannot allow Frank Gore to run roughshod over them like they did last year. And, unlike last year, the 49ers actually have more than one receiver to cover. If Bentley, Houston, and Delmas can't play, we're in trouble.
It's hard for me to see the Lions winning this game, but the 49ers rarely win in blowout fashion, so it should be a one-possession margin of victory.

I am a bit worried about this game. This is one of the biggest games of the year since they are facing the best D, the whole team has really good everything!! I can't wait though. I have my expectations a bit lower though. Ben Graham and Hanson need to be top of their game as well for good field position and those field goals add up. _________________ AAL: Jacob Lacey |
