I love Wilson - the guy's a musician, he's from South Carolina right near where I grew up - but I don't think he belongs as a starter. |
Then don't think of him as a starter.
The Packers run the base defense 25-30% of the time. The other 70-75% they are in nickle and dime packages. In those formations, the #1 DL is Raji and Worthy. The 3-4 where Wilson comes in isn't really the "main" or "base" defense, it's a subpackage. |
Once Worthy truly has figured out what he is doing Wilson will not be our everyday starter. _________________

It doesn't change the fact that the 3 down lineman who are in the 3-4 aren't really "Starters", except by out of date concepts of "base" offenses and defense. The same thing applies to offense. Is FB really a "starting" position in most offenses? _________________

Well I guess I misused the word starter. What I've seen this preseason, with the #1 defense, is a lot of base defense. I've also seen Wilson playing an awful lot in that base defense (>75% of the time).
It doesn't matter that we only use the base a certain percentage of the time. The fact is it's our main defense for stopping the run. Wilson plays a huge part in helping our defense stop the run. He hasn't been particularly good at it, from what I've seen. If they insist on playing him extensively in our base - to stop the run - then I fear we're in for some more gouging like what we saw from the Chiefs. |
