I'm not sure if that new rule they voted on goes into effect this season. I think they would take advantage of that if it does.

Dont hold me to this but I think that rule does go into effect this year but Streeter wouldn't be eligible for it for a reason I'm not really sure of. I saw on twitter that PFT says players going on IR today aren't eligible but the other day they said the Steelers could use it for decastro. Again, this could be wrong but thats just what i remember reading

Quote:

Note: Any player placed on IR today is not eligible for the new IR procedures where the player can return later in the season.

I just thought I'd address this earlier question/confusion with the new rule.

Players going on IR yesterday weren't elgible for the new IR Exception (IRE) because the rule states that the exception can only be granted to a player that makes the final 53 man roster and is placed on IR after that point.

So the Steelers would be able to utilize the IRE with DeCastro if they had DeCastro make their final 53 and then at some later point, placed him on IR.

Also another reason for why we wouldn't have been able to use the IRE on Streeter is that a player that has the IRE would have to be made known during the time he's placed on injured reserve.

Lastly, I wouldn't think it to be a good idea to place the IRE on a player like Streeter anyway since there isn't many circumstances where he becomes a valuable part of this team. I think the IRE should be utilized by teams as a trump card of sorts. It should be saved for key contributers that might go down early in the year. For instance- Ray Rice has a hamstring injury in week 2 that will take approximately 6-7 weeks to heal... he's the perfect candidate for the IRE knowing that the HB position needs more than just 2 healthy runners, yet Rice when healthy is definitely going to be a starter. In the past you might be forced to cut a guy like Bejema or Chykie Brown to get another back... but now teams have an ace in the hole.

So our primary needs right now:

Safety Depth
Pass Rusher (not pass rush depth, we need a STARTING PASS RUSHER)

I tend to agree with these as our primary needs. But we're probably not going to find any outside answers. I think the edge threat position will just be something similar to what we had to deal with from our WR position last year. The passing attack was so inconsistent because of the youth and chemistry issues, but the baptism by fire definitely tended to help Torrey and Pitta especially as the season progressed. We just have to hope that we see similar improvements from Kruger and Upshaw/Kindle/McClellan.

I'm a little more concerned by the safety spot right now however. Because Ed does have his shoulder problem and while Pollard does dish out a lot of pain with his brutal hits... that's somewhat of a double egded blade. The way I see it, our pass rushing situation can- for the most part- only go up from here... whereas if either Reed or Pollard go down with an injury we'll be forced to a) start Considine b) switch a corner to play safety c) start a rookie safety... and in either case we're either losing incredible experience or we're losing our only secondary enforcer. A blow to the safety spot would be really tough to deal with.

The unlikelihood of getting a competent pass-rusher is why I think finding a rotational SAM would make more sense. Then they could use Kruger more in the pass-rusher role that he's better suited for and Upshaw wouldn't be totally relied upon either. I'm not sure who's out there to fit that role though.

I wouldn't put out past us to trade for a guy with the adjusted salary cap and what we, have seen from the guys we have I don't see why we wouldn't. Now mind u I have no clue if anyone is even available to us in that way but it seems like we need somebody else

I think this all depends on how we look probably throughout the first quarter of the season. Harbaugh and Ozzie probably won't want to rush into anything too soon. So the way I see it, if our team is looking good enough throughout that time period, we see where Suggs is on his recovery and if he looks like he's having some complications and/or not the best prognosis for a week 6-8 return... then we start scouring the trading blocks to see what's out there.

Either that our as c0 stated we explore the list of cuts to see if any pretty good veteran SAMs were made cap casualties and we're able to pick them up for cheap.

There is absolutely no way Suggs comes back by week 6-8. If we get him back by week 15 we'll be very lucky.

Anthony Allen, Omar Brown, Josh Bynes, Jack Cornell, and Antoine McClain are on the PS. Room for three more.

He'd have to be taken off the PUP list by week 9 so he'd have to come back by that time frame. Suggs himself believed he could be back by November... which would put him in that week 9 time period. If he's not able to comeback until week 15 then that's not lucky at all... that's expected on a normal timetable. If Suggs isn't cleared to start working out by week 6-8 and in football shape about a month later, then we might just have to consider shutting him down for the season. Suggs will have to prove to coaches and the front office that he's on the path to returning while the season still matters and chemistry is still buildingk if they're going to cut someone who can help this team in some other way.

Aaron Wilson ‏@RavensInsider
Ravens adding former Cowboys linebacker Adrian Hamilton to practice squad, per a league source. Had 20 1/2 sacks last season at Prairie View

I'd have assumed that Nigel Carr and Ish Kitchen would have been on there too. Maybe they will fill the last 2 spots?

I'd really hope so, I like both guys. So if we could get that done I would be super pleased.

The Ravens visited with free agent S James Ihedigbo on Saturday.

Ihedigbo was a rotational safety with Patriots, but is a liability in pass coverage, and would be accepting a special teams role in Baltimore. Emanuel Cook (fractured leg) was injured in Ravens' preseason finale and is out for the year.

I would guess Ihedigbo is better than Considine Rolling Eyes

Over who? Payne is a special teams only type of player and the team doesn't have a lot of excess at non-skill positions to give him a roster spot. With 11 DBs and 6 WRs he wasn't making the team.

Adrian Hamilton is an interesting addition. He's a guy I wanted to see us pick up as an UDFA, so it's nice that we have him now. He fits the rush OLB role very well. If the pass rush doesn't look very good early on, he might be a guy we could bring into the mix to be a pass rush specialist instead of going for a trade or free agent. I'd like to see what he can do at a higher level of competition because he looked like a man amongst boys in his Prarie View highlight tape.
