Make it rain!

Here's some more T.J. Ward.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Ward started the first 24 games of his professional career at strong safety, but the streak snapped last season after he sprained his right foot in Week 9 against the Houston Texans. Ward tried to return for Week 15, though his foot did not respond well, and he ended the season on injured reserve.

Other injuries, however, mounted before then. Ward said he suffered a strained hamstring in training camp that lingered, sprained his right wrist at some point during the regular season and got stitches at halftime against the Texans because a bone in his left index finger broke through the skin.

“My hamstring was messed up,” said Ward, who compiled a team-high 105 tackles in 2010 and 38 last season. “I had that and I missed all the preseason games except the first one. I never really bounced back. The first three games I was dealing with it, then when it finally kind of started going away — it was just a tough year for me — I hurt my wrist. No one knows about it, but I had a hurt wrist coming into the Texans game. In warm-ups, I had a cast on, but it was so [restrictive] I had to take it off. Then I got in the game and hurt my finger. I came back the second half of that game and hurt my foot.”

When healthy, TJ Ward is a top 10 SS in the NFL. The Browns run D really struggled in the 2nd half of the year on the outside and I think a lot of that was due to Ward getting hurt. The Browns gave up 127 yds/g on the ground up until that Houston game (in which they got gashed for 261 by Foster and Tate) and 163 a game from there on out. I have high hopes for the defense next year if Ward can stay healthy. Rucker should help against the run as will getting Scott Fujita out of the lineup. Pass rush really took a hit with Taylor going down but hopefully one of Parker or Bernard can surprise. Throw someone in the secondary stepping up their play (Skrine, Hagg, Patterson, Young?) and I think they can hang with the other AFC north teams.

^^^

The key for TJ Ward is the same as when we drafted him: he has to stay healthy.

He has every intangible you could want, and his college film, along with his performance at the combine (when he tested through the roof, including all the coverage metrics), moved him way high on the Browns' board.

I still bristle when I see people complain that he can't cover. I believe he most definitely can cover. His problem is that when he plays hurt, he's vulnerable against the pass. When healthy, I have full confidence in him.

Be well, TJ.

I agree. He can cover. I just don't see him staying healthy.
