Heard this idea on Sirius a little while ago. Pat Kirwin mentioned how he would assess his team's pre-camp depth by asking "what if" about every starter and determining the next guy up.
So, here is a quick run-down of the "next guys up" I typed up for the Bears. I left the incumbents in place for position battles.
*QB Jay Cutler > Jason Campbell
*RB Matt Forte > Michael Bush
*WR X Brandon Marshall > Alshon Jeffery
*WR Z Alshon Jeffery > Earl Bennett/Devin Hester
*WR Y Earl Bennett > Devin Thomas
*TE Kellen Davis > Matt Spaeth
*HB Evan Rodriguez > Kyle Adams
*LT J'Marcus Webb/Chris Williams
*LG Chris Spencer > Chilo Rachal/Edwin Williams
*C Roberto Garza > Chris Spencer
*RG Lance Louis > Chilo Rachal/Edwin Williams
*RT Gabe Carimi > Lance Louis/J'Marcus Webb/Chris Williams
*RDE Julius Peppers > Shea McClellin
*NT Matt Toeaina > Stephen Paea
*DT Henry Melton > Stephen Paea
*LDE Israel Idonije > Shea McClellin
*WLB Lance Briggs > ?
*MLB Brian Urlacher > Nick Roach
*SLB Nick Roach > ?
*RCB Charles Tillman > Kelvin Hayden
*LCB Tim Jennings > Kelvin Hayden
*NCB DJ Moore > ?
*SS Major Wright > Craig Steltz
*FS Chris Conte > Craig Steltz
So there it is. Feel free to comment, or do your own. A few notes:
*Linebacker depth is still paper thin. Of course, the problem is that with Briggs and Urlacher and the amount of nickel the Bears have to play, there's not a good way to develop some of the younger guys.
*Behind Paea/Toeaina/Melton, I don't know who anybody is on the interior line. Looks like they have a few rookies and vets in there. Same goes for CB. There are a lot of guys to sort through.
*I was pretty outspoken about how I felt the Bears needed to draft a tight end, and that position still concerns me. Whatever they're trying to do with Kellen Davis, I'm not confident that Matt Spaeth would be able to emulate.
*There's a lot of flexibility at receiver, and, even though the level of talent is not great, there's a lot of positional flexibility on the offensive line. |

Urlacher's the heart and soul of our defense, if he goes down, I wouldn't trust anyone bar Ray Lewis or Luke Kuechly to do the job. Decicco is fine, he'll be fine, but it won't be nearly the same. If Briggs go down, Hayes should be able to fill in so long as Urlacher's there.
I trust Ronnie Cameron at DT more than most, I think he'll be hungry and trying to prove himself. If Melton goes down, we're not the same. But Cameron could take Paea or Big Toe's snaps.
We drafted a TE, if Davis goes down, I expect Rodriguez to be a vanilla version of what he could be, but I'm not worried.
My worries include: Cutler, Urlacher, Marshall, and Peppers. Despite a huge upgrade at backup qb, we need Cutler and the other three to win a Super Bowl this year, especially Cutler/Urlacher. The other two could work with rookies by the 2nd half of the year. |

Whatever they're trying to do with Kellen Davis, I'm not confident that Matt Spaeth would be able to emulate. Spaeth will not be used that much as a receiver but is a great blocker so he won't be "emulating" Davis. There is no mystery as to how they are going to use Davis. It will be as a traditional TE particularly in the Red Zone where he has shown that he is VERY effective.
Spaeth can catch the ball as well. The rookie we carried last year showed some talent when he had a chance, too. And, don't forget, we drafted one.
*There's a lot of flexibility at receiver, and, even though the level of talent is not great, there's a lot of positional flexibility on the offensive line. | What is encouraging about the line is that we now have players with some experience in starting which was very light last yr. And you are right about the flexibility even the rook FA adds some. |

I expect DJ to get passed up by one of the 12 lol DBs we added to the roster this offseason......my moneys on Brandon Hardin....I can also easily see hardin taking over for major wright this season
Im more or less happy with our quality of depth across the board, it's the most quality of depth we've had in such a long time....or maybe JAs jaded me into apreciating anything
Idk, im most worried about starters at a couple of positions. |

DJ Moore is not getting passed up for the nickle back position, I would say that is one of the few positions locked up. _________________

The interesting part about Hardin in at he has FS speed at SS size and CB skills. He worked a FS during OTAs, presumably with Steltz working at SS.
So you have to wonder how they'll deploy Hardin. There are a lot of options. |
