I know, the hate that goes on for Roy, the game evolved, and he wouldnt be able to play in today's game because of RG, but watch this video, and tell me the last time our defense made plays, or had a killer instinct like he had. What we are missing from this Defense is a Roy Williams (31) and for 4-5 years, he was the most feared defender in the league, and he was a Dallas Cowboy.

I think we have a guy who is poised to fill that role this season and for years to come...he just happens to play a different position and wears the #50.

That's the thing I always argued. Roy may have not been the best cover safety. But he was the best playmaker I have ever seen. He was the X factor on the D. From causing a fumble, to giving a bone crushing hit to change the tempo of the defense. He was unreal. I still remember the hit he had on McNabb. What a game.

He did bring a physical playmaking game to out D but like you said the game evolved and he didn't. Watching the video now I'd say that 3/4 of those hits would be penalties in today's NFL.

I would agree. Lee is going to become, if he is not already, the physical and vocal leader of the defense. Smart, heady, and intense. With the improvements in the secondary, if this D can just find someone other than Ware to provide a pass rush they can be something special.

Roy was awesome moving forward. It just so happened that after Woodson retired, Roy had to think, and actually cover. Teams realized they could match up their kicker one on one with Roy and win. |

Early in his career, with Woodson as his partner, Williams was terrific. As someone else said once Woodson retired, the wheels came off for Roy Williams. All I remember is a safety who had terrible issues covering anyone. Horrible angles to the ball and horse collar tackles due to being out of position most of the time.

Roy Williams was amazing in his prime (even after Woodson left). He wasn't bad at coverage in his prime, either. Look at how many int's and Passes defended he had. He was ALWAYS around the ball...
He sucked after he got paid, kelly rowland broke up with him, and he got too religious. (im not saying practicing religion makes u bad...)
I can not and will not guess why this happened to him but the three things i mentioned above happened and he went downhill... This is also the same time he got fat!
Moreover, when he was exposed by offenses it seems we did nothing to adjust for it... He was not bad at coverage per se, just deep coverage... He was ok when everything was in front of him...
Just look at how many plays he made in his prime, he was definitely top 5 safety in his prime. Tackles, Fumbles, Int's, 3rd down tackles... even sacks and tackles for a loss... I think only Reed had more turnovers through the prime of Williams' career...
Basically, I think he wasn't always a bad player who's deficiencies were just hidden early in his career, he literally in one off-season went from being elite, to average, then continued his downward slide...
Can we think of any other players that seemed to do this? (not huge injury related though)...
Maybe the other Roy Williams too lol (even though he never was elite like the other RW
