http://washington.cbslocal.com/2012/06/07/graham-gano-feeling-good-in-a-familiar-kicking-battle-with-redskins/

He's back at it and from this report he is looking and feeling good. Maybe with the Rackers competition this year, he will become a better and more consistent kicker for us.

Quote:
He fractured two bones in his lower back while making a tackle against the Philadelphia Eagles in the final game of the season. Perhaps thriving on competition, Gano showed no lingering effects of the injury in Thursday’s practice. Both he and Rackers successfully connected on all eight of their attempts, though the incumbent seemed to have more leg on his kicks.

“It’s funny breaking your back as a kicker,” Gano joked before saying he’s feeling pretty good now.

Without the blocks, Gano connected on 31 of 36 field goal attempts for a solid 86 percent success rate. In contrast, Rackers connected on 32 of 38 attempts for an 84 percent success rate without any blocks.

As for the blocks? “We’re having a big emphasis on that,” Gano said.

Sounds promising. Pray

If the blocking was even solid, there wouldn't be any questions or concerns about the kicking game. At least that's the way I see it.

I think you have to give Gano another two years in the very least - even if he isn't a franchise kicker, he could be pretty good interim guy. But, I have a history of defending Gano as much as any other player. I cannot be the only who remembers the short-ranges of Gano's predecessors. I think he has the leg to kick 60.

I do like Neil Rackers though. I wonder if Shanahan would keep two kickers. It would be unorthodox, but let's not forget the amount of receivers the team has carried. Carrying two FBs, like the team did in 2010, probably happens just as often.

If there can only be one? It's Gano.

I think Rackers will win. That dude was very good and consistent . only reason he got released was because he was expensive for the texans.

I like Gano too and he did improve this year but comes down to it I think Rackers is more better . Either one is good . The ST needs to not allow any more block kicks which was like what 5-6 this year?

I'm with footy on this, if Gano kicks consistent and as good as Rackers this preseason, he will be the guy. If there is a competition between a 20 something player and a 30 something player and they look even in practice and the preseason, you keep the young guy. At that point when the performance is equal, and in gano's talent is actually greater, you keep the youth so you can build with the player for the future. Gano had some problems with clutch ness over the past few years but I think he can get better and I know the blocking can get better. If those two things happen this year, then we have one of the best kickers in the nfl. Gano would have to kick horribly for Rackers to win the job.

Footy, I don't see any way we keep two kickers. Gano has a strong leg for knockoffs and he's accurate, we don't need two guys. It sucks because if we cut either guy they will have a new job within days, but oh well, we can't do anything about that. This teams has too many question marks in other positions on the team (mostly secondary and OL) where we need to keep plenty of depth and I think we keep 3 qbs this year as well. I just don't see us keeping extras in any positions this year, and that includes wr, Or at least I hope. I know Kyle is an ex-college wr and he likes to keep extras there, but I hope he wises up and realizes we need to keep more OL depth than wr depth. OL depth was an issue last year when injuries hit.
