Rick Gosselin lays out the case...factors working against the Cowboys

Quote:
Published: 01 June 2012 10:40 PM

Jerry Jones feels a sense of urgency.

The NFC East counters with a sense of reality.

No logical intersection is in sight in 2012.

The Cowboys were the third-best team in the NFC East last season with an 8-8 record. They went 0-4 against the two teams above them in the standings, the Giants and Eagles.

Yes, the window is closing on this team.

The clock is ticking on the Cowboys. The owner hears it. Does his team?

In regards to Mr. Goesslin's thoughts and perspective of the upcoming season centering on the NFC East, YOU ARE A MORON!
He goes on to talk about Romo, Ware, Wittenand Ratliff all being in 30's. He points at numerous stats from last year and where each team finished regarding total offense, defense etc, etc, etc.
He points out the teams Dallas faced last year as opposed to this year.

Let me begin:
1. Yes Romo and company are in the 30's. And they are considered our best players FOR A FRICKIN REASON! Are you ready?? You sure, here it comes....drum roll please....................E-X-P-E-R-I-E-N-C-E!!!! Ding ding ding ding! You do not get experience without playing for a number of years and passing a little time. in short....YOU AGE, you frickin idiot!
We just trimmed how many over the hill players?
a. Newman, James, Brooking, Kosier, Elam.
We have how many rookies, 2nd and 3rd year players starting?
b. Murray, Bryant, Claiborne (possibly), Smith, Lee, Arkin, Kowalski, Nagy, and I'm sure I am missing some.

Lest we forget the big bad Iggles. Yeah they had 50 sacks last year, yeah their TE had 1 good season and he is being mentioned with the likes of Witten and Gonzales and other top tier TE's. Same thing with their RB, all of a sudden he is Barry Sanders, no Sheat, I have actually heard people say that. So, they sign 1 LB and all of a sudden their LB issues are solved? Let's take a real close look at that. A LB that is coming off of season ending surgery for a ruptured achillies tendon. The same injury that Ryan Howard is dealing with for the Phillies. He isn't expected back until mid July at the earliest. Point is, it takes about 1 year to fully recover. And believe me, DeMeco Ryan will be pushing off on that a great deal more than Ryan Howard.
Dallas, on the other hand, signs LB Dan Connor who just happened to play opposite Sean Lee at PSU, a.k.a. LB college and they get no mention of that. They also signed a top tier CB, a S, 2 OL and a solid back-up QB, and again, none of this means anything to Goesslin.

Speaking of backup QB's, I wonder who will be piloting the Iggles offense when Vick goes down again. Now, THERE is an aging QB! But again, no mention of that window closing huh? So, if and when he gets hurt again, who will lead this team that, all of a sudden, is the new favorite to win the superbowl? Yeah big window for the Iggles to win it all. This has been going on for 10 years now! But their window isn't closing.

2. As far as last year's stats are concerned, throw them out. This is the new N-F-L! It is like a game of poker, every year is a reshuffling of the deck so that each team can keep what they like and trade up for, what they hope will be, better players. With that comes a Zero-to-Hero possibilty for many bubble teams. So, in short, last year's stats mean absolutley nothing!

3. As for the schedule, it is much like my last paragraph. The simple fact is you play who is on your schedule. You cannot determine how well that team plays, has played or will play when they face your team. Again, Goesslin's point is pure, grade A, 100% bullcookies!

About the only thing I can agree with concerning his prophecy is that the Giants will be formidible once again. They have just run a gauntlet, again, to claim another Lomabardi trophy. Off seaseaon changes or not, this team has proven they know how to win.

So Mr Goesslin, about the only thing I take from your, a-hem, prediction is that you are being over paid to stir the propaganda pot, which is something many of us NFL fans cannot live without. You are a rube and an idiot, but you are probably rich and I guess that is what matters most to people like you.

I've come to the conclusion that Gosselin isn't as knowledgable as he'd lead some to believe...and I think, much like Bayless, has an apparent agenda against the franchise.

So, to be honest....his opinion means very little to me.

I've got a ton of respect for Goose, but his argument seems silly. Dallas had some of the most continuity in the league from 2009 to 2010. Didn't do them all that much.

So let me make sure I understand...If a nationally respected writer thinks the Cowboy's window is rapidly closing then he is a moron/hater/or has an agenda.

Ok, got it.

No...that's not it.

The reasoning he used to describe his opinion as to why our window is closing is what has everybody up in arms.

Yes, some of our "star" players (i.e. Romo, Witten, Ware) might be aging...but in the grand scheme of things Witten and Ware are just entering their prime and Romo is coming off his best year ever as a pro. They don't seem to be regressing at all.

He doesn't mention that we "cut the fat" off the roster last year and yet were still just one game away from making the playoffs. He doesn't mention that we added one of the better young corners in the game in Brandon Carr. He neglects to mention we have a plethora of young talent emerging in DeMarco Murray and Tyron Smith, and players who are looking to establish themselves as elite in Dez Bryant and Sean Lee. He also fails to mention the impact we will likely see from our draft class, especially rookie Morris Claiborne.

the goose is fantastic on the draft due to having nearly every gm on speed dial, but i find his opinions on the cowboys are lacking.

Agree with this last. Goose is da bomb on the draft, but he is much less knowledgeable (IMO) when he's talking about the game itself.

I don't get how the window is closing on the Cowboys when they have just gotten significantly younger across the board and the oldest person to likely make the team is Romo at 32. Only a few more over 30 on the whole team.... more like the window is re-opening.

We just need to groom a QB to replace Romo and find someone to eventually step into Ware's shoes.

No, that is just my point. I am NOT a nationally respected writer but the logic I used to debunk his assessment of the upcoming season regarding the Cowboys is pretty obvious and sound, especially coming from an amatuer in his professional field. THAT is what makes him a moron, natinonally respected or not.

So the logic you used to disprove his point includes Arkin, Nagy and Kowalski becoming a major part of the future of this team? I wouldn't be surprised if 2 of those guys didn't make the team.

This has nothing to do with this argument, but question for you. Does TD-ES-JJ stand for Tony Dorset, Emmitt Smith, and Julius Jones? It has always bothered me and I never really asked...

Ok, carry on with the debate

Let's do it this way, since TD-ED-JJ seems to feel that the prime candidates on your list are Nagy and Kowalski-- Starters under 30 (parentheses mark positions where the job is up in the air, but all candidates are under 30):

Offense: Austin, Bryant, Smith, (center), (guard), Free, Vickers, Murray

Romo (32), Witten (30) and Nate Livings (30) are the only ones over 29.

Defense: Spencer, Hatcher, Lissemore, Lee, (ILB), Carr, (CB), Sensebaugh, Pool

Ware (30) and Ratliff (31) are the only defensive starters who project to be over 30. I don't believe Coleman even makes the team and I don't believe Spears starts, but if he does, he's 29.

So all told, out of 22 starters, only 5 (roughly 23%) are over 30. Of those five, three are just 30, one is 31, and the oldest, at 32, is a QB with plenty of tread left on his tires coming off of easily his best year ever, when his #1 and #2 receivers were both battling injury all year.

That is *not* an aging team.

For what it's worth, Sturm does a better job of making largely the same point: http://www.foxsportssouthwest.com/05/26/12/The-Lost-Years-on-the-Cowboys-roster-/landing_cowboys.html?blockID=735912&feedID=10194

It's not that Dallas is too old, it's that most of their best players don't fit the ideal age range (25-29).
