Welcome to the thread, which will work similar to FFNBA, but only with a fantasy draft. We are looking to have 16 teams (with active managers) that will be able to manage their teams from year to year. In terms of the success of the league, it depends on you and also largely on us. In the past, I have ran a Simulation League that was actually pretty successful and got a full draft finished. So, with that being said, here are some ground rules:

The Draft

The draft will be completely randomized and will occur in snake order. Ideally, time slots for picks should be about 4 hours per pick, but I would like to get that done in a much more timely fashion. I think that we have enough active members to make picks quickly. If need be, I can make time slots, but I don't think they will necessarily be needed. We will be having 16 rounds with 12 on the active roster, 3 on the reserve, and 1 coach.

Drafting Players

Any player (including 2012 rookies) are eligible to be drafted. Make sure to keep your drafted player limit under the 70 million dollar cap number however.

Drafting Coaches

Coaches are drafted in the main draft along with all the other players. For all drafted coaches, there will be no cap hit on your team. Also, you will be able to sign your coaches for contracts up to 4 years (with no cap hit). If you want to fire your coach however, you will be able to sign a coach making the NBA player minimum (0.4)
For all drafted coaches: Once their contracts run out/are fired, they will be thrown into the free agent pool along with all the other players and will be dealt with like players.

Salary Cap

We will be having a salary cap in this league and we will be using real-life salaries as well. Here are some of the guidelines about this:

We will be using the salaries on http://storytellerscontracts.com
The salary cap will be set at $70 million dollars with a hard cap at $85 million. The only way to go over the $70 million dollar cap is when re-signing players with Bird Years, signing a player to the MLE (which will be set at $6 million), or signing rookies. All in all, just try to stay under the $70 million dollar limit and you should be okay.

Rookie NBA Draft

For the first year of this league, the rookies are going to be included in the main draft. The first rookie taken in the draft will get the #1 salary and so on. In future years, we will use a system similar to the real NBA Draft to account for selections.

Voting

There will be 4 Random Divisions of 4.
There will be 2 Conferences of 8 teams.

Voting will occur at different points in the season. The first poll will probably go up around the beginning of August. There will be 4 other polls that occur about every 25 real NBA games through the season.
The Conference winners will all make the playoffs and there will be 1 wild card team from each Conference that also makes it. Therefore, the playoffs will give the 1st seed a bye week.

Important

I am going to be looking for dedicated people who are going to be active in the draft. This isn't really too much work overall and shouldn't be too tough unless nobody participates.

We will be starting with the fantasy draft. After we finish that, we will be doing the NBA Draft (in randomized order), and we will be SKIPPING FREE AGENCY THIS YEAR. So players who are bound to be free agents this year will just be using their 2011-2012 salaries.

Free Agency will involve ONE 4 Year Deal, ONE 3 Year Deal, TWO 2 Year Deals, Unlimited 1 Year Deals

Possible Expansion

After the first season, depending on the success, we may look to expand the league and slowly add more teams. This all depends on the success and interest of the league however and is not a certainty. In the case of expansion, we will have an expansion draft which will be detailed at a later date.

I've got some thoughts on how the rookie part of this draft should be done.

In my mind there are two possible scenarios...

A: The rookie part of the draft should be done in reverse order of the fantasy draft.

B: The rookies should all be draft eligible in the main fantasy draft.

Either way the rookies should be given contracts equal to those of which they'd be given in real life.

The first rookie taken would likely be Anthony Davis, and he'd be given the contract that the first pick is given in real life.
5.1 / 5.4 / 5.6 / 7.1 / (9.7) (Kyrie Irving's contract #1)

The next rookie taken would be given the contract of the #2 pick. These will not change from last year to this year, so it'll be easy to do. So on and so forth until all 30 first round rookies are taken care of. After that, all second round rookies will get 2 year deals (0.5 / 0.8).

#1 pick was Kyrie Irving. The #1 rookie taken in our draft will get that contract also. So on and so forth until all 30 first round rookies are taken care of. After that, all second round rookies will get 2 year deals (0.5 / 0.Cool.

I kind of like scenario B to be honest. At least for the first year of it. Then there are possibly more than 32 rookies taken as well.
