And injuries.

My biggest concern with Kyle is how fans will embrace him (or not) and how he will handle it. Alex can handle all the BOOs in the world, we know that. But what if Kyle drops an easy pass and gets booed, and booed exponentially with every mistake. He could be spiraling down very fast, if he can't handle the pressure. I wouldn't personally boo him. Every mistake is just one mistake. But I know fans will compound all of his mistakes and boo for every single one of them at once. A dropped pass will be booed with the passion of a muffed punt in the NFCCG by many.

The only good thing I see about this is, he'll probably have all his teammates rally around him, just like after the playoff loss, when everybody stood up to defend him. But I do think the best for his career is leaving. This being said, I thought the same for Alex a year and a half ago.

To me there is another factor to why he shouldn't be on the team and that's because he serves absolutely no value on special teams. If he is gonna be our 5th or 6th WR on this team then he'll really never see the field. I'd much rather keep a guy like Owusu as our 5th or 6th, even Brett Swain would compete in value with KW. My best guess is Kyle's time with the Niners is done before the season begins

Yeah, i don't think Kyle would play special teams if he made the 49ers. He's not a gunner or jammer...certainly not a returner (he's made dumb plays as both a KR/PR this eyar). If he makes the team he's likely a gameday inactive too.

I'm personally hoping Owusu can steal his spot.

Not trying to attack you here, very sincere. But i'd like to hear more about these specific roster battles you're projecting

Kortnei Brown over Cam Johnson
Michael Thomas over Colin Jones
Daniel Kilgore over Jonathon Goodwin (i hope this happens, Kilgore is younger, stronger, and cheaper, but has a lot less experience)

Also not too big a fan of keeping 8 OL and 6 DL..think it's a little too light. I might subtract 1 TE (Byham) and 1 WR (Williams?) for an extra OL (Derek Hall or Chase Beeler) and DL (Ian Williams).

Not trying to attack you here, very sincere. But i'd like to hear more about these specific roster battles you're projecting

Kortnei Brown over Cam Johnson-Love both of their skill sets. They are both athletic and have good size. The fact that Cam has sickle cell trait turns me off somewhat, I read somewhere that it can really affect your energy level, which would explain Cam's inconsistency at the college level. I think this will be a good battle and can see it going either way, and honestly don't really care which way it goes as long as we can keep the other one on the practice squad as I feel they both have potential to be very good role players in this league.
Michael Thomas over Colin Jones-I think they are very similar athletically and much like Brown and Johnson, I can see it going either way. I simply selected Thomas because I read he had been breaking up a few passes in OTAs. This could all change of course once the pads come on. I know this coaching staff likes versatility and if they think one of these players can contribute on defense as well as special teams, that player is going to get the nod.
Daniel Kilgore over Jonathon Goodwin (i hope this happens, Kilgore is younger, stronger, and cheaper, but has a lot less experience)-You pretty much said it for me. I'm not very high on Goody, he's old, not very good at this point, and is making more money than he should. I'd rather get Kilgore in there and gelling with the rest of the line.

Also not too big a fan of keeping 8 OL and 6 DL..think it's a little too light. I might subtract 1 TE (Byham) and 1 WR (Williams?) for an extra OL (Derek Hall or Chase Beeler) and DL (Ian Williams).-I can't see us carrying two TEs. As far as receivers go, I don't really expect Ginn to see the field at receiver. I think he will strictly be a return man for us from here on out. I don't remember who it was, but one of the beat writers (Maiocco maybe) was saying that he didn't think we'd have people on our 53 if they weren't going to be used throughout the season. This to me says we will stash our players that wouldn't normally get any playing time barring an injury on the practice squad. so say we lost Isaac Sopoaga for the season, we'd bring Ian Williams up from our PS for depth.

When it comes to newcomer cornerback Perrish Cox, Fangio suggested it's not a question of whether he makes the team but how much he plays. Said Fangio: "He's going to push for playing time if he continues to work like he's done so far." Cox has been playing both cornerback and nickel back, which Fangio insisted are two different positions. Cox had a very impressive practice on Tuesday, which included an interception and a couple of pass break ups.

Glad he's putting in work. I said earlier that he was a capable starter.
Glad we got him for 2 years two. Cuzz we did it with Carlos but only for a year then we ha to pay up. NOT CAMPARING THE TWO PLAYERS, just their situation

Pretty close... minor tweaks for me:

- I'd have Kilgore as primary backup C.
- RJF as primary NT backup.
- rush LB Fleming on I.R.
- Boone as starting RG.
- Jenkins or Williams as # 4 WR.
- Jason Slowey on practice squad as developing OL.
- LMJ might technically be behind Hunter and Jacobs as RB.

Dovetail off of Barrows article to this one. It is a Cohn article but actually a decent one IMO Shocked Or I'm suffering from football blue balls and I'm desperate...

The importance of Perrish Cox

Quote:
I was reading a Greg Cosell article this morning called “The Evolving Chess Match” and I found it interesting, so I’m passing it along to you.
Here’s the key excerpt from the article: “There are always exceptions, but defensively, if you expect to beat the top passing games, you must be able to stop shotgun offenses with five receivers than can align at any position. That’s the next frontier.”
The Niners rarely faced empty-backfield spread formations last season, but you can bet they will next season. They’re facing the Packers, the Patriots, the Lions, the Saints and the Bills – five teams that are known for their spread offenses.
That’s why Cox will be a tremendously important player for 49ers next season. Offenses are going to spread their defense out and challenge Cox. You can bet on that.
It’s a good strategy against the Niners for a few reasons...

If you are even clicking on Cohn articles, then yes... blue balls is definitely the symptom. Wink

Just some of my thoughts....

QB- Is Tolzien practice squad eligible because he is almost guaranteed a spot on it if he doesn't make the team and nobody else picks him up. I'd like to keep him... pre season should tell a lot but Johnson has to be the favorite and we will most likely keep 3 QBs.

RB/FB- If Cartwright makes the team he might go under ST player or even backup FB. Remember without Norris we have an extra spot because we had 2 FB last year. If Miller goes down we could pick up an outsider, use Sopoaga/Tukuafu or possibly Cartwright. This would allow us to keep Gore/Hunter/James/Jacobs. Then again maybe Dixon beats Cartwright out or we cut both of them.

WRs- I expect us to keep 6 WRs. Crabtree, Moss, Manningham, Jenkins are all locks. Ginn to me is almost a sure thing and Williams shows too much promise to get rid of.

TE - Seems likely we keep 3 TEs with Byham and Reuland battling it out. Slim chance we keep 2 to save a roster spot IMO.

OL- If Kilgore shows enough promise as backup C then I would think Slowey would be on the PS. Kilgore can backup RG spot after Boone or C after Goodwin. Looney should be in the mix as well for backup. Person probably makes it as backup tackle. Boone probably slides to T if one goes down and Kilgore/Looney go to RG.
----------------
DL- Liked what I saw from Tukuafu a few years back in the pre season. He hustled and had more sacks in 1 game than Balmer did in 2 years. Anyways, he showed promise in little playing time and had a FR for 12 yards in his 1st game. Was placed on IR after 4 games. Seems like almost a lock to me. Only wonder on the DL to me is Dobbs vs Ian Williams possibly unless we keep 7 DL and both probably make it.

OLB- Fleming to IR makes it easy on us so we don't have to pick between Johnson and him if we keep 4 OLB. Brooks, Smith and Haralson are locks IMO. Kourtnei Brown could possibly push Johnson for that 4th spot but he probably ends up on the PS. If we don't keep 4 Johnson to PS.

ILB- Odds are we keep Gooden and make it 4 ILB. Unless we were worried about someone else signing Grant why have Gooden back if we only wanted 3 ILBs?

CB- Have said all along and will stand by it in that both Perrish Cox and Tramaine Brock make the team. Expect good things from both of them.

S- Goldson, Whitner and Spillman are all locks. Seems like Robinson battles it out with Colin Jones for the last spot. Doubt we can afford to keep both unless we keep Jones for ST reasons instead of Cartwright.

*******************************
So the battles/questions...
-3rd QB: Josh Johnson vs Tolzien (Johnson the favorite)
-RB/FB/ST: Cartwright/Dixon or neither?
-DL: Dobbs vs Ian Williams or both make it?
-4th S: Trent Robinson vs Colin Jones
-3rd TE: Reuland vs Byham
-Backup Center: Kilgore vs Slowey vs Beeler
-Backup FB: Sopoaga vs Tukuafu vs Cartwright vs Dixon or multiple guys
-3 or 4 OLBs?
-5 or 6 WRs?
*******************************

-------MY ROSTER--------
Offense: (25)
QB- Alex Smith, Colin Kaepernick, Josh Johnson
RB- Frank Gore, LaMichael James, Kendall Hunter, Brandon Jacobs
FB- Bruce Miller
WR- Crabtree, Moss, Manningham, Ginn, AJ Jenkins, Kyle Willliams
TE- Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, Reuland (Byham not fully healthy?)
OT- Joe Staley, Anthony Davis, Mike Person
OG- Mike Iupati, Alex Boone (Backup T as well), Joe Looney
C- Jonathan Goodwin, Daniel Kilgore (backup RG as well)

Defense: (24)
NT- Isaac Sopoaga, RJF (3rd DE as well), Ian Williams
DE- Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Will Tukuafu, Demarcus Dobbs
ILB- Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman, Larry Grant, Tavares Gooden
OLB- Aldon Smith, Ahmad Brooks, Parys Haralson, Cam Johnson
CB- Rogers, Tarrell Brown, Chris Culliver, Perrish Cox, Tramaine Brock
S- Dashon Goldson, Donte Whitner, CJ Spillman, Trent Robinson

ST: (4)
K- David Akers, P-Andy Lee, LS-Brian Jennings, ST-Rock Cartwright
IR - Darius Fleming

Only problem I had was my last 3 I am unsure about which are Cartwright, Colin Jones and Ian Williams. Two of them can make it with my roster scenario. Went with Ian and Cartwright (vet leader as well) but could easily go with any two of them.
