“James Hanna is a receiving tight end out of Oklahoma. He’s a local guy out of Flower Mound. He’s a guy that we would consider an ‘F,’ not an on-the-line ‘Y’ tight end, a guy who can block on the back side of things. That’s how we describe our ‘F’ position. And also has some receiving skill. He ran below 4.5 at the combine, so he’s a guy that can get down the field and threaten the defense that way. He really has the measurables to be a blocker, as well, and you see that. He obviously played at an outstanding program. We really like James Hanna.

^^^^^ Garrett address all 7 picks

Quote:
The negative long-term prognosis is why the Memphis player went from a possible third-round prospect to undrafted. The Cowboys signed him Saturday night after the draft.

"It's about how long he can play," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in announcing the signing. "It's not about now. That's why he fell the way he fell."

The Cowboys have been high on the 6-foot-3, 315-pound senior since taking him through a private work out at the school.

Quote:
“We were trying to win the NFC East championship, unfortunately, with guys like Alan Ball and Frank Walker,” Jones said. “Not trying to be rough on them, but guys get hurt, and we would like to have good players to be available, and Mike Jenkins is a damn good cornerback.”

Quote:
"I didn't want to put on the bravado that I don't really want to be here," Spencer said. "If I'm here, it's better, and they'll know I want to be here. ... I don't want to be out of shape and not around the team. It's unnecessary. Last year we had the short offseason, and then we were putting the defense in so quickly. So, having this extra time and being around the defense, I know we can have a really good defense. Just being around the guys and building that camaraderie and building the team, that helps out a lot."

Whether it's for another year or another five, Spencer has made it clear he wants to stay in Dallas. After the team passed over premium edge rushers in the draft, it appears more likely that Spencer will be around for the foreseeable future.

Quote:
But Archer's point is that the willingness of Garrett to allow this offseason to be taken over by defense speaks to his own confidence about his ability to lead the offense. He has reason to believe in skill-position players such as Tony Romo, Dez Bryant, Miles Austin and, if healthy, DeMarco Murray. And the addition of new offensive line coach Bill Callahan as well as a couple of free-agent offensive linemen should help address the biggest problem the offense had last season -- the line. Archer reaches the following conclusion:

Claiborne’s arrival has Jenkins’ future in question. Jenkins is in the last year of his contract and is scheduled to make a little more than $1 million. He is also coming off shoulder surgery and as I wrote on Friday, the team is a little concerned at how much rehab time he’s spending in Florida and not at Valley Ranch. But I wonder what you could get for Jenkins. The money is palatable but he will be an unrestricted free agent in 2013. And he’s coming off major surgery and won’t be ready until training camp. Jerry Jones likes to say a player’s value is lowest at the draft, so they could not get equal value for Jenkins or close to it. I wonder if the Cowboys let Jenkins play out the year, hope he does well, signs a big contract elsewhere and then hope they can get a compensatory back in 2014. The team doesn’t wonder about this (they say) but I wonder if they would like a do-over on Orlando Scandrick’s contract.

On how he feels about working alongside Miles Austin and Dez Bryant

"I'm very excited to get right in and get around those guys. Try to learn as much as I can learn from the receiver standpoint to the cornerback standpoint and both of those guys are great, big receiver and I'm looking forward to getting some work in with them so they can make me better."

On the possibility of getting some reps as a reciever

"I would love to be a two-way player. If they gave me that chance to be able to go both sides of the ball I'll love it and I won't turn it down. I get in and give it 100 percent."

On what stood out about Morris Claiborne:
“Obviously, a good corner has great skills. He can pedal, change direction and all of that is important. You’ll see a lot of corners when it’s it flight knock the ball away, but they won’t make a play on the ball. What jumped out at us were his ball skills. He intercepted balls, and turnovers in a game are so critical. You can knock a pass down on 2nd and 8 and they get another opportunity to get a first down, but if he intercepts the ball and turns it over, that’s huge for our team to get an extra possession and hopefully go down and score.”

On if Danny Coale can be a threat to win the No. 3 wide receiver spot:
“He’s just a very competitive kid whether he’s playing special teams or if he’s a receiver. I like the fact that he’s a smart kid. Again, I mentioned position flex on Crawford. This young man will know the offense. He can play in the slot, he can play outside, he can play on special teams, he punted for them, and he’s just a unique athlete. He’s got the right nervous system. It’s not going to be too big for him. His father is a strength coach at VMI so he’s been around football all his life.”

Quote:
“He’s the blue-plate special player in this draft,” ESPN analyst Todd McShay said on TV after the Coale pick was announced. “I just love the way this guy plays the game. He’s quick off the line, he’s competitive, he catches the ball in traffic. He’s tough, he has better than average speed.”

McShay said that former Bills, Panthers and Colts general manager Bill Polian thinks the 6-foot, 201-pound Coale has many similar qualities to New England’s Wes Welker, another undersized receiver who has made four Pro Bowls.

Quote:
Morris Claiborne is still smiling.
I met the LSU corner for the first time backstage at Radio City, and all of us who did were impressed with his sincerity, poise and emotion. He was thrilled to go to Dallas in the trade-up from 14 to six in the first round. I covered much of his story at the top of my column Friday, but what's the most fun about the draft, after all the ridiculous hype and snoozy buildup, is when a great story happens, stunningly. And Claiborne, the best corner in the draft, who no one thought had a prayer of getting beyond the fifth pick in the draft, was there for the Cowboys to pluck at six after trading. Dallas missed the playoffs last year because it couldn't play pass defense in the fourth quarter of the biggest games. And now the Cowboys have rebuilt the secondary (Claiborne, Brandon Carr) in one offseason. Claiborne was shaking with emotion talking about how his son now "is never going to want for anything. Now I'm a Cowboy ... It's ... just ...
"Amazing. Amazing. Following in the footsteps of Deion Sanders. Amazing.''

The Cowboys didn't interview the LSU cornerback at the Scouting Combine in February. They didn't spend time with him at the LSU pro day, or bring him into Dallas for a pre-draft visit, or schedule a visit to see him on campus. Resemblance: Adrian reminds me of John Abraham of the Atlanta Falcons. Abraham is a player who is relentless, has a great motor, and is great at stopping a play in the backfield. Adrian has the moves already to be a successful pass rusher. He will need to work on a few things in the early stages of his career, but could be a very effective pass rusher on situational pass downs. When you look at John Abraham, he is similar in size 6’4 and weighs 263 pounds. Abraham has put up great sack totals, with a total of 112 sacks. Coming out of school in South Carolina, Abraham was a similar player to Adrian. I can see Adrian having comparable success to Abraham in the NFL, if he is in the right system.

Laughing You think? Good to see Ball and Walker are not expected back. Been a long time coming with Ball.

I've seen this floating around here a few times. I like Coale's ability as much as the next person, but the Wes Welker comparisons are already getting old.

Nope. The comp picks come after they've played a year. Things like playing time and awards are taken into consideration.

It's why we got a 4th round pick this year for Stephen Bowen. not last year.

Anyway, we only get a comp pick if we don''t make any moderately big FA signings. Which seems unlikely.

I feel the exact opposite. I feel like it is VERY likely part of the plan that we will let Spencer and Jenkins walk after the 2012 season; not sign anyone big named, and get 2 high comp picks for them in the 2014 draft.

When signing Free Agents next year, it will be a matter of both a contract and the possibility of costing us draft picks. I think smart management would really weigh that into the decision of who to sign.

I really hope that i am wrong, but i think spencer will sign a long term deal with the cowboys at some point.

I love it that Stephen Jones threw Ball and Walker under the bus. I wish we would have a FFMD-style GTFO party with Ball in real life. That would be so freaking awesome.

I totally agree though. I really like what i see in Adrian he looks like a high effort guy with some talent as well....he is a project, but I could see him being highly successful.

If its cheap enough, I would be all for it. We cant have an all pro at every position and for all his faults.. Spencer doesnt suck. He is just not a playmaker.

I think by training camp, Adrian Hamilton and Ron Leary will be a lot of people's pet cats. Frankly, I think I like those 2 better than 75% of our actual draft picks.

Hamilton could become our James Harrison.

The thing about Hamilton is he is not just a situational pass-rsuh, this guy can play the run, he has covered in the flat, and he is relentless in his pursuit to the ball. He splits double team, has a swim, rip, and spin move to that rival most elite pass-rushers. I guarantee you this guy will be starting by mid-season. Ware, Lee, Carter, Hamilton. My god what a LB core if this kid pans out.

Like I said About Hamilton since December. He is a baller and will be wrecking havoc on opposing offenses. Been my pet "DOG" for many months now, so glad we was able to pick him up. I actually had us getting him in the 7th round.
