If the Ol can turn out to be as good as I think, this guy could be a real threat out there, especially with his receiving skills. Haley must be happy with this pick and I am with the new OL Laughing Maybe Dwyer will be gone, depending how many backs they keep. Maybe Rainey will break out with a few home runs and stay in the lineup. He is our only break away threat with Mendy PUP.

Moore better not be the 3rd down back, and he might not even make the team.

He's 5' 8", 174 lbs. He's not going to be an RB for us.

He's going to be a special teams guy, return guy, and gunner. And he'll be a gadget guy, reverses whatever.

He has more chance to be a slot WR than a real RB for us.

I was gonna say, we might carry him on as our 5th WR.

How about 3rd down back?

I could see that too, but I could see us carrying Redman, Dwyer, and Clay in addition to him.

That's exactly when I would not have him in there, unless it's 3rd and long. Usually, 3rd down is somewhat short, 2 or 3 yards and you want a big "Redman" type in there, not the little "Chris Johnson" type.

Also, I just read that Rainey is a fumbler, fumbled eleven times in his career, six times in his senior year alone.

Definitely have concerns about the character and mindset. I dont care if he lived with the Pounceys for a little while, I have a very similar situation to that with my step brother. I'll leave it at that. If they move in with him in Pittsburgh maybe I'll think different, but I'm very leary.

As for his on field skills. I wouldnt compare him to Sproles. Sproles was able to run anywhere on the field when he played in college. Ronnie Hillman would be a better comparison to Sproles but even Hillman was not as good as Sproles inside. Javid Best was able to run inside well.

Rainey is not a pushover though and I give him credit for that. If we get 2-3 good years as a mismatch weapon I'll be happy.

I hope Batch comes back healthy and can stay on the field, I have my doubts based on his history.

I dont have much enthusiasm for Clay at all. I defintiely would like to see more FA running backs brought in to compete.

Dwyer ok, Redman good.

Vick Ballard is going to be a workhorse steal for Indy. Michael Smith -Utah State will probably shine unexpectedly by most. Chris Polk will florish in the perfect system for him in Philly, I cant believe they got him as an UDFA, may not have been right for us, but perfect for Philly, 2nd round talent.

I love him as a special weapon type of player. Let Mendy/Redman get 30 touches between them to soften the D and get this kid 5-6 good touches a game and it will be exciting. Imagine a 4-1 formation with Wallace, Brown, Sanders, and Clemons at WR and Rainey at RB, 5 guys running 4.45 and faster all there at the same time- how do you match up with them?? Now granted I am dreaming a little with Clemons making the team, then a contribution, but I love the speed this team now has as weapons!

Rainey only had one issue, as far as I know, and that was the harassment text to his girlfriend. Other than that he is clean. Rainey runs inside and outside and is tougher than most scatbacks his size. I love Vick Ballard and wanted him as a Steeler. Polk, I hear, had some type of microfracture surgery. I don't think he will make the team cuz McCoy, Brown, and that McCoy clone lol.

Many of those holes were very wide open at Florida even vs SEC defenses. As much as I like Demps I had some of the same concerns. Im sure he will see an occasional draw, but Id hardly ever expect more than that out of the backfield. The key for him is will he be able to pass block some, then we will be able to truly utilize him. Believe me, I have been itching for a mismatch out the backfield and in the flat for several years, so Im happy in that aspect.

As far as character I have more concern than just arrest record for every prospect. Kids make mistakes, Im more worried about what I feel is their propensity to do more of the same.

I'm much happier that we grabbed Rainey, rather than "reach" in Rds 2-3 for Pead and L. James like other teams did. Rainey is much more explosive when watching him on tape and really, has better "hips". I think someone on NFL Network, I think, yesterday, referred to Rainey as an "ankle breaker" or something to that effect. He changes direction so quickly it's insane. (6.50 sec 3-Cone, 3.93 sec 20-shuttle, 11.06 sec 60-shuttle)
That said, he takes one good "pop" on a return and he could be OUT.

I'm not overly concerned w/ the fumbling issue. He actually has big hands (9-1/2") for a guy his size, (James=9", Pead=8-5/8") so that tells me it's technique and sloppiness rather than not being able to hold on to the ball.

If Rainey had a long history of issues or we took him earlier in the draft...id probably agree.

As it is, its not a huge risk IMO. Rainey IMO is the type of "mismatch" player many have been looking for, and in the late 5th you arent likely to find much better, if any. I think its generally low risk, potentially high reward.

And as I said before and as Ward4HOF just stated, Rainey is just a less hyped version of LaMicheal James who got taken 3 rounds earlier. If Rainey played for Oregon, Id wager he would be just as productive if not more. Rainey has better COD and played vs better compeition.

I still wouldve never taken Rainey higher than the 4th round, but in the 5th, I think he could be a very nice find. He has had his issues, but its not like we have alot invested in him either.
