Legislators from both houses and parties emerged with clear marching orders: Revive a stadium bill that died in a committee earlier this week or face the departure of the franchise. Goodell said he made "no implied threats or any threats at all," but in reality he didn't need to. The team and league are giving the state another 10 or so days of exclusivity before opening the door to relocation alternatives.
Focus now shifts to the Minnesota Senate, where the bill will be heard in a committee Friday afternoon while parallel efforts to revive it in the Minnesota House are under way. But the larger question is not whether state leaders agree on the issue. It's how effective they can be, or how willing they are, in strong-arming enough dissenters into pushing the bill to a vote of full membership.
From what I understand, the Vikings feel confident that enough legislators will vote for the bill if it makes it to that level. That makes the next seven-10 days the most important in the history of the franchise. Stay tuned.

just so everyone understands the bicameral (two body) legislative process...
the Minnesota state government has two legislative bodies - a House and a Senate. a bill may originate in either body, but must be passed by both. then the executive branch (Governor) approves it and it becomes law.
the bill that failed in committee review earlier this week was a HOUSE bill. by not passing that committee review, it failed within the House so no further progress was expected.
what has happened now is that the SENATE body has taken up the issue and passed a review of their own bill in one committee. now it goes to another Senate oversight committee.
what the Vikings and NFL are trying to do is force the bill through the committees and their reviews so then the legislative bodies have to vote on it as a full body.
making sense?
the Vikes want ALL the legislators to go on public record as supporting or opposing the bill, even if it fails.
it's a good tactic. not that they have many choices or options available to them.

I'm excited. Most interesting thing to happen to the Vikings since the '09 championship game. I know a guy who is pretty tight with a few reps, and he says there is no chance they are leaving; it's just the way it works in MN. Same thing happened with the Twins, got done at the 11th hour.
Let's hope to god it works out! |

| This "were going to move to LA" approach really seemed to get the state to wake up. It should have been used years ago, but i guess, never late than never. hopefully this momentum will continue to build. |

as to whether to use the moving to LA card, it actually was played masterfully today.
by Goodell.
because throughout Zygi's term as owner he goes on record as never saying he was going to move or sell the team, and often stated he wants to stay in Minny. he's the good guy, but Goodell played the heavy.
Goodell and Art Rooney Jr show up and explain the financial benefits of a NFL team being in your city and state, and let the... well... rather... provincial legislators in Minny know the NFL will stand behind Zygi if he wants to move.
and within hours the process is moving again.
sorry if that felt like strong arming today to some, but that's what the legislature has been doing.
that's why i say The Commish Served Hot Dish.

It (reference to moving to LA) proved a point that was needed to be said. for so long, the state assumed the Vikings would never move. Now that there was seemingly support for moving as an option, the vote came in to support the Vikings in its quest for a stadium. If the tactic was never used, perhaps the senate would have voted the bill down too. |

Glad to see the ball get rolling… but I don't even feel like this is the 11th hour. Isn't there like almost 2 weeks left in this session? It could fail and pass again in that time seeing how fast it happened this week...

oh, the legislative process is a very slow one. particularly if you're trying to find half a billion dollars. a LOT of hoops have to be satisfied by a lot of people.
it most definitely is the 11th hour. well in to it, in fact.

| Nice angle, VD. The NFL has no problem manipulating political outcomes. They have the skills to pass the bills no doubt. Is that a good thing for the good people of MN? Not in my opinion. I can't vote for anybody who has an open ear to the NFL when it comes to state decisions. As loyal fans go, Minnesotan's have endured enough over the years. We don't need the NFL pressuring our elected officials. |

House Speaker Kurt Zellers, who has long been vague on how much influence he will exert for the project, also contributed to the new stadium energy by predicting Friday the proposal would get floor votes in both the House and Senate before the Legislature adjourns in the coming weeks. In one key change Friday, the Senate panel added a 10 percent surcharge on stadium suites bought or rented for NFL games.
Vikings vice president Lester Bagley said the team opposed the 10 percent tax on suites because he said it violated the deal the team agreed to when it pledged $427 million to the stadium plan.

Isn't it the time to just let the senate do what they need to do to pass the stadium bill?
You're asking for a half billion dollars. If this 10% suite deal is what it takes to get your team a new stadium, just shut up and let it go.

well, the Vikings have no ability to decide what is in the bill that gets debated and reviewed and modified.
but they certainly can have an opinion on it. and if you start giving concessions here and there, then you start giving away even more.
and by concessions, the Vikes ain't talkin' hot dogs.
